Bengals WR Chris Henry dies today

Published: Thu, December 17, 2009 @ 12:12 p.m.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry died today, a day after falling out of the back of a pickup truck during what police said was a domestic dispute with his fiancee.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Henry died at 6:36 a.m. Henry was 26.

"We knew him in a different way than his public persona," Bengals owner Mike Brown said of the player who was suspended five times during his career. "He had worked through the troubles in his life and had finally seemingly reached the point where everything was going to blossom. And he was going to have the future we all wanted for him. It's painful to us. We feel it in our hearts, and we will miss him."

Police spokeswoman Rosalyn Harrington said homicide detectives have been assigned to the case but had no further information.

Henry was rushed to the hospital Wednesday after being found on a residential road. Police said the dispute began at a home about a half-mile away, and Henry jumped into the bed of the pickup truck as his fiancee was driving away from the residence.

Police said at some point when she was driving, Henry "came out of the back of the vehicle." Police have not released the 911 tapes, and Harrington wouldn't say if the woman, whom police would not identify, was present at the scene when police arrived.

We are big Bengal fans and were excited to see Chris turning his life around. He had gone from being a running joke to being a legitimate football player. This is a sad day for his family, friends, team mates, and Bengal fans.

Ever notice, when it comes to sports the bigger the ball is the dumber the athlete with the exception of perhaps soccer .

Now in his defense, Tiger is trying to change my perspective!

Are we sure that he was trying to harm the girlfriend? If so, where did you get that info? I am curious.

As much as I hate to see young people die, would you be sad if he wasn't a NFL player and if you seen this in the obituary you would just say, he was a common thug. We need to really serious stop worshiping Athletes and Celebrities. There's more worthy people in our lives then them.

Dec. 15, 2005 — Henry is charged with marijuana possession in Covington. He pleads guilty to the charge and avoids jail time by entering a drug rehabilitation program.
Jan. 28, 2006 — Orlando, Fla., police arrest Henry and charge him with possession of a concealed firearm, improper exhibition of a firearm and aggravated assault with a firearm. He pleads guilty to carrying a concealed weapon — the other charges were dropped. He’s ordered to serve 100 hours of community service and is placed on probation for two years.
June 3, 2006 — Henry is arrested for DUI in Union Township, Clermont County. Henry avoids a DUI conviction by pleading guilty to a lesser charge of reckless operation of a vehicle. He’s sentenced to 30 days in jail. The sentence is suspended, meaning Henry is free as long as he meets conditions imposed by the court.
June 14, 2006 — Henry turns himself into Covington, Ky., police, who arrest for him for alledgedly providing alcohol to three under-aged females in a Covington hotel room. Henry pleads guilty to permitting possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors and serves two days in jail. He is warned that if he breaks the law again, he’ll have to serve the remaining 88 days of the 90-day sentence behind bars.
April 2, 2008 — A warrant for Henry’s arrest was issued in Hamilton County Municipal Court after he allegedly punched an 18-year-old man in the face and broke his car window with a beer bottle. Henry was charged with misdemeanor assault and criminal damaging in the April 1 incident in Cincinnati.

Been a year and a half since he got arrested, I bet he was a good little boy for that year and a half. Now that is just my perception, I do not have data to back that up.

I added the disclaimer since if I had accused him of any wrong doings during the year and a half, someone would of wanted proof. Just trying to be politically correct!!! After all, it is almost Christmas.

cambridge, thanks for those kind words, we certainly appreciate it! You should also thank the unemployed (probably by choice) liberal that came up with your list. He/she/it wouldn't by chance of done one on democrats also would he/she/it . Oh that is right, all dumocrats are honest.

Isn't it fun to joust with one another from time to time.

You make big bucks playing a kids game for your profession and you jump into the bed of a pick-up truck knowing that someone is in the cab and can drive away with yourself being unprotected in the bed area. Well, you get what you deserve, being tossed out of a moving vehicle. What a stupid way of losing your life.

It would be interesting to know what our boy was doing at the time he was ejected. Just being in the pickup bed would not be that dangerous if you had any brainpower and stayed down inside the bed. I could picture dufus trying to do one of these movie stunts where he tries to climb in the passenger side door. Guess we will never know unless girlfriend fills in any details.

Saw where one of Tiger's docs got nabbed trying to bring in HGH from Canada. Tiger has seemed to of bulked up recently. Another "more money than brains" brother. At least they are entertaining!!!

Everyone on this blog needs help. Everyone says that if he was not a football player we would not even care and they are right. Yet, they are still here spouting their disturbing views on humanity like anyone cares about them. They imply the only people we should care about are the ones we have met and know personally. How many of these people knew the pope but were saddened by his death? According to you if a person isn't born perfect (read white and wealthy) they are not worth anything. And heaven forbid you make a mistake you are thrown away like yesterdays garbage. It is funny the double standard on these blogs. I will bet every penny I have (not many) that everyone on here got into some trouble but you are so old that either a. there wasn't cameras around to cover it b. no body cared or c. your dad was drinking buddies with the sheriff and your trouble was brushed away as kids having fun.

No one has the right to criticize.

Also, Penguin Bird, your list is a joke. You listed maybe 20 people from a group of thousands. I bet if we rounded up everyone in your community we could come up with proportional numbers. You don't seem to realize it seems like alot because it is national news.

Most people deserve a second or third or fourth chance but you people don't seem willing to give them a fighting chance.

"They imply the only people we should care about are the ones we have met and know personally."

Say he was a local citizen and the Vindy put out a article on how he died, and then listed the criminal aspects of his life, you could actually truthfully tell everyone you are sadden and grief stricken or would you think reading the article, "Oh, just another thug off the street" or just read it and forget about it.

"How many of these people knew the pope but were saddened by his death?"

The Pope helped mankind and the World. The Pope brought peace and unity. The Pope is not a athlete/celebrity.

"According to you if a person isn't born perfect (read white and wealthy) they are not worth anything. And heaven forbid you make a mistake you are thrown away like yesterdays garbage."

(white and wealthy???) Anyway, everyone has made mistakes, I was in prison for my dui's. And I'm turning my life around, but when I die, noone is going to be sadden by my death, except for my family and friends.

All I'm saying is don't hold up athletes and celebrities like there the second coming. There human like me and you.
My condolences go out to the children, family and finance'.

"Most people deserve a second or third or fourth chance but you people don't seem willing to give them a fighting chance."

I have a felony now, and it's really hard finding a job, noone seems to want to give me a second chance (let alone a 3rd,4th,5th) but I accept that because I broke the law and paid for it, it's called taking responsibility for your actions. I learned from my mistake and paid the price but I'm just a regular citizen and I can't get a fighting chance but a athlete can get numerous chances and make millions beside that and people feel sorry for them. Isn't something wrong here?

Yes, Chris Henry had problems, and he paid a dear, dear price in the end. But my frustration and anger are at the people who seem genuinely happy about a man's death. This is not an either/or situation. It's not either you're sobbing over the death of your idol or you're totally unaffected by the death of a worthless thug. People should be able to recognize his faults and yet not be smugly self-righteous about his death. There are very, very, very few people I would categorize as deserving of death, and Christ Henry is not one of them. That's a designation that we had better leave for the absolute wost among us.

If Henry had been sentenced to death by a judge for his crimes, our society would be rightfully outraged, and yet people on these boards are saying things like, "He was a LOSER and a THUG and the world is a better place without him." and "They should give his girlfriend a key to the city for killing him" and "Well, you get what you deserve, being tossed out of a moving vehicle." Those are harsh words that speak of a profound disrespect for life.

And for the record, if I saw a local obit of a death under similar circumstances, yes, I would be sad. It's a tragic senseless death. Three children lost their father. Under no circumstances should that ever be entertaining, or funny, or relished.

Maybe the pope was a bad example. What I should have asked was why wouldn't you be sad over the loss of anyone's life. Does it matter whether it's the pope, a football player, a child, a plumber, a housewife, a petty thief? You don't have to cry over it, but you also don't have to be so callous and uncaring. As the saying goes, have a little respect.

A person who says someone deserves to die because they made mistakes like Chris Henry's, in my book, far lower on the humanity scale than almost any criminal. There's a reason the death penalty is reserved only for murderers. 99.9 percent of people do not deserve to die and do not deserve to have their deaths celebrated by anonymous idiots.

PenguinBird.....Chris Henry's actions were a window into what was in his mind and heart. If I were counseling a child growing up in the world today I would point to Chris Henry and say, "that's not what you want to do and that's not who you want to be".

I read your posts and your words are a window into your mind and heart and I would tell that child the same thing. "That's not what you want to do and that's not who you want to be."

Noone is happy that Chris Henry died. Noone thinks it's funny. Noone is uncaring. Noone deserves to die, except for the monsters that do deserve it. Noone is saying that. And the only reason it's senseless is because he did it himself, noone told him to jump in the back of truck. I really seriously think you wouldn't be sad if he was a local citizen, you probably wouldn't even read it or give two hoots about it. Be real.
If someone laughs or is happy about a person dieing then there not worth anything. They are useless people not worthy of nothing.
All I'm saying is people need to stop praising these athletes and celebrities, no matter what they do, they can't do no wrong, even when they break the law or do something that in real life, you would be criticized and put out to dry, but they do it, it's ok. But since there stars they do nothing wrong, even when there wrong. Does that make sense?
Something isn't right when they are above everyone else.
