YSU looks at one of its own to become the university's next president

Published: Wed, December 16, 2009 @ 5:39 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State University is looking at one of its own as a candidate for the post of university president.

The YSU Board of Trustees announced today that Cynthia Anderson, vice resident for student affairs at YSU, is one of four finalists for the position.

The others are C. Jack Maynard, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Indiana State University; Cheryl J. Norton, president of Southern Connecticut State University; and Aaron Podolefsky, president of the University of Central Missouri.

The board will schedule campus interviews for all four in mid-January and expects to name a successor to David C. Sweet in February or early March. Sweet is retiring June 30, 2010, after serving 10 years as university president.

No one is more dedicated to students and the YSU family than Dr. Anderson. She is a wise person with uncommon common sense and would be an excellent president. She has widespread support on campus....

I have known Dr. Anderson for many years.
She has always been accessible to students and faculty; well respected by the community and loves the University!
Just this year she led the United Way campaign that set a goal of $45,000. The total is now almost $60,000!
She certainly would make an excellent president.

I say it's wonderful to look and promote from within! Why so many companies, over the years, feel they have to look outside their companies and area for administrative personnel? Look at Forum Health. They've had numerous CEO/Presidents over the years and look where it's got them. Create incentive! Promote from within!!

Dr. Anderson would be nothing but an asset to the university and it's students. She is one of the hardest working people at YSU. First and foremost she is their for the students and enjoys what she does. As a current student I would love to see her as our next president. It would be the University's loss if she were to be passed over.

YSU needs to bring a new and outside prospective to the university. The next president needs to realize the economic reality of YSU's funding and deal firmly with the union.
