Cleveland ices Pittsburgh

Published: Fri, December 11, 2009 @ 12:10 a.m.

CLEVELAND (AP) — There’s nothing Super about the Pittsburgh Steelers anymore.

The defending NFL champions lost their fifth straight and had their playoff hopes sacked by the lowly Cleveland Browns, who ended a 12-game losing streak against their bitter rival by beating the Steelers 13-6 on Thursday night in subzero wind chills.

Ben Roethlisberger was sacked eight times and lost for the first time in 11 career games against the Browns (2-11), who extended Pittsburgh’s longest losing streak in six years and defeated the Steelers (6-7) at home for the first time since 2000.

“A long time coming,” Browns quarterback Brady Quinn said.

Pittsburgh’s postseason chances are in peril — if not over completely. The Steelers are going to need help to make the postseason, a stunning freefall for a team that hit the season’s halfway point at 6-2.

Unexpected losses to Kansas City, Oakland and Cleveland — three of the NFL’s worst teams with a combined record of 9-28 — have pushed Pittsburgh to the brink.

Chris Jennings, who began the season on Cleveland’s practice squad, scored on a 10-yard run and Phil Dawson kicked a pair of 29-yard field goals for the Browns, who snapped a seven-game losing streak, a 10-game slide at home and beat the Steelers for just the second time in 20 games.

Roethlisberger tried to rally the Steelers, but his fourth-down pass to Santonio Holmes with less than two minutes left was knocked down by linebacker David Bowens.

When Holmes was tackled on a punt return and the final second ticked off the scoreboard’s clock, frozen Browns fans, who were nearly outnumbered by Terrible Towel-waving Pittsburgh fans, danced in the aisles.

Several Cleveland players sprinted down field and jumped into the Dawg Pound section to celebrate.

The win was just the second for Cleveland’s embattled first-year coach Eric Mangini, who certainly helped his job security by beating Pittsburgh, something no Browns coach had done since Butch Davis six years ago.

Josh Cribbs, Cleveland’s Mr. Everything, rushed for 87 yards out of the wildcat formation, had 104 return yards and caught one pass for 9 yards. Cribbs picked up a big first down on a 14-yard run in the fourth quarter when the Browns were trying to milk the clock.

Still, the Steelers managed to get the ball back with 6:16 left at their own 21. Roethlisberger, who has broken Cleveland’s hearts before, began working his team down field with short passes. But he was sacked at midfield in the final two minutes and had his final pass batted away.

Quinn, making his first career start against Pittsburgh, completed just one pass in the second half and finished 6 of 19 for 90 yards.

Roethlisberger went 18 of 32 for 201 yards. He had trouble throwing in the swirling winds that consistently blew over 20 mph and the Steelers were never able to establish their running game against the Browns’ defense, which came in ranked 32nd overall.

Cleveland’s defense dominated the first half, sacking Roethlisberger five times and pressuring him on nearly every snap.

Jennings’ 10-yard scamper around right end — the first TD scored by a Cleveland running back in more than a year — put the Browns up 13-0 late in the second quarter. With their defense stuffing the Steelers and the temperature dropping, the Browns’ lead seemed insurmountable.

But the Steelers drove 58 yards in 41 seconds and got a 27-yard field goal from Jeff Reed as time expired to close within 13-3 at halftime.

Reed’s second field goal with 8 seconds left in the third brought the Steelers within a touchdown.

But Pittsburgh was unable to put together a scoring drive in the fourth.

Browns/Steelers: One team had receivers who couldn't get separation and when they were open dropped the ball. They had an indecisive QB who looked confused and slow. Their defense couldn't stop the run, even when everyone KNEW who was getting the ball. The other team played aggressive, attacking defense (8 sacks), tight coverage and totally shut down the opponent's running game while their offense ran the ball efficiently and used field position and special teams to demoralize their rival. Yep, sounds like a typical Brown's/Steeler's match up, now will you please trade back your uniforms?

It does feel good to say this....PITTSPUKE SUCKS!!

looks like pittsburgh has totally given up this season.

as for the childish "banter" on here, seriously, get some new material. both sides.

penguinbird, i'm a steelers fan but this season is a lost cause. the streak wasn't gonna last forever so take the jobbing like a man. let em have this one.

cleveland fans, words like "pittspuke" and "squealers" sound like they come from 6th graders.

with all that being said, with the combination of people at work and friends on facebook, i've never seen so many browns fans come out of the woodwork all of a sudden.

MikeyMike....Finally. The Browns win...and guess what? Nobody even cares. It's about time the Browns beat the Steelers because frankly, when they played on Sunday afternoons, it was a great time for a nap...knowing that 99% of the time, the Steelers were going to win. Let's see...2-11 is the Browns record, right? The Steelers are 6-7? My point is the Browns ENTIRE season revolves around, not winning the Super Bowl, but beating the Steelers. How gay is that? "Come on guys, we can go 1-11, as long as that 1 win is against Pittsburgh." MikeyMike is the typical Browns fan. Oh, and MikeyMike...since 2005, who has won 50% of the Super Bowls? We measure the success of our season on Super Bowls...not beating the Steelers. Congrats! You losers FINALLY did it. FINALLY!!!!

I was thinking the same thing this morning.....lol
It is what it is, when we lose to KC, Oakland, Cleveland in the same year, we don't deserve a playoff season....long time Steelers fan and all I can say is reload and come back next year.....hopefully we get back on track quickly...

What makes me laugh is that any Stealer fan would have the audacity to say Browns fans are coming out of the woodwork. Are you serious? Im a Bears fan and Ive seen all too well the Stealer fans are the ones who come out the woodwork. Stealer fans are so dumb they throw their apparel away after a losing streak only to go out and shell out more money after a couple of wins. Now Stealer fans want to fire Tomlin who was considered a great young coach after last year. Stealer fans are fairweather fans for the most part but hey with all these fans jumping ship atleast there will be room for the true ones.

You steeler fans act like it's no big deal but you would have been the first ones posting at 11:45 p.m. if you had won. One last point about never playing in a Super Bowl: The Packers, Giants, Bears, etc. count pre Super Bowl and Super Bowl championships when they determine how many times they've been champs. The old Lombardi teams of the early 60's, the Lions of the 50's, the Giant teams with Y.A. Title and Sam Huff, and the Colt teams with Johnny Unitas all won pre Super Bowl championships. Therefore, when Penguin Bird posts that the Browns have never won anything, he is wrong as the Browns have 4 NFL championships. In addition, the Browns won AAFC championships (I think 4 of them). Think the AAFC was bad? So bad that when the Browns moved from the AAFC to the NFL, they won the NFL championship in their first year.

The Browns won and we will savor this win as it's a long time coming. Give credit to the team for not quitting this year. As for the Steelers, it feels great as we are the team which put the final nail in the coffin this year for them.

He said he had sex with your mother? Damn. I'd be pissed too. Penguin bird sounds like a total loser. He probably wouldn't last one second on an actual football field. He's probably best left to his dark basement drinking blatz and pleasuring himself to animal porn. You are most defineitely the better man, Mikey. I'm not a fan of the Steelers or the Browns, but I can tell you this, I would rather talk sports in general with a Cleveland fan than a Pittsburgh fan. I have found Pittsburgh fansto be the most obnoxious bunch of dolts that have ever existed. They seem to think that because the owners of the team have put together a winning combination and win a championship, that the average fan automatically knows every facet of the game in question and if that knowledge is questioned, the only answer seems to be the number of championships that particular team has won. So I wouldn't sweat what Penguinbird has to say Mikey, I mean, the only prerequisite to be a Steelers fan these days seems to be a craving for IcLight and the ability to count to six.

Good post Boardman. This Penguin Bird guy has a bad attitude about everything. If a company announces that they are expanding or hiring, he will still bash them. He constantly bashes the area. I don't live in the area anymore but I still "root" for things to turn around up there.

I am a Steelers fan. PenguinBird gives all fans a bad name. He is an immature idiot. This is the type of person that gets beat up for running his mouth. To refer to someones mother is totally inexcusable. It goes to far. He might be 12 or13 yrs old because that is the mentality. Just shut up. Mikeymike you have reason to take it personal.

The Browns beat the Steelers in all phases of the game. It wasn't even as close as the score indicated. For me, it was painful to watch as has been most of this season. But the Browns were ready and they wanted it more. They seem to have played better since Quinn was reinstated as the QB.

As a Steeler fan I believe we are just spoiled. We expect to win every single game, which is unrealistic, but that is the mindset. We talk super bowl because each year that is the goal. We expect to at least be one of teams playing to reach that goal. Mikeymike you say you know your team is bad and accept that. I can somewhat understand that because I also follow the Pirates and who could be a worse team to follow. I don't root for them to beat anyone in particular. I would just like to see them win. But baseball is different, there are 162 games of potential misery to face. My question is, even if the Browns finish 2-14, are you to the point that it is a successful season if one of those wins was against the Steelers?

"CHOKEland CLOWNS"

As a die hard Steeler fan, I think we CHOKED last night....not Cleveland. We were playing for our playoff lives and Cleveland (and I hate Cleveland) was just playing for pride. Well Cleveland had more desire then we did and won, so I can't see how you can say Cleveland choked? That is really immature and talking about someones mother is totally uncalled for, so do us true Steeler fans a favor and just go away, because your not a Steeler fan, your just a sad little fool. Quit embarrassing yourself and Steeler fans. People like you are what gives fans a bad name.

Most Steeler fan are front-runners plain and simple. A lot of local (Y-Town) Steeler fans were 49er fans when Montana was there and Cowboy fans before that and probably Browns fans in the 50s and 60s. Just because the Browns won their NFL Championships before most of the posters here were born doesn't negate their importance and just because they renamed the Championship later doesn't diminish the accomplishments. Steeler/49er/Cowboy fans can add up all of "their" titles and prepare to jump on the next bandwagon. And before you go all ballistic about recent super bowls, just remember you can't have it both ways. Either count ALL of the NFL hsitory including when the Steelers were the worst team in the league and the Browns were on top or throw out ALL of the history and answer the question, "Who won?". For today, Browns fans get to say, "We did."

Two things actually good happened for the Browns on Thursday night. One, they FINALLY beat the Steelers (I give them credit. They simply outplayed my beloved Steelers) and two, they finally had a running back rush for a TD. Prior to last nights 10 yard TD run by Harrison, the Browns had NO rushing TD's by running backs. Brady Quinn has ran for a TD, but not a running back. Congrats Browns. You finally snapped the streak and acted like YOU were the team that had a chance at the playoffs. Yes, I am humbled and I am saying that my Steelers were outplayed by the Browns.

GO STEELERS. They will be back.

Say what you will, but stay true fellow Browns fans, as both teams start to rebuild(LOL) and we both will, they are watching dimplechins boys gettin older and Tomlin isnt any good. Riding Dimplechins coat tails will only get you so far(5 in a row). Whine all you want about Mangini, but he wont get fired, he will go through the "process" and our team will prevail finally. They No more "look at me" type players. Blue collar kids with heart, as we just witnessed. I look forward to the next game. Does Birdboy? No he doesnt cause facts are(5 in a row) his team is on the decine and fast. Move over panzy boy

And yes, we have had to endure another year of stress. No big names, just alot of young kids got the first year in and will have that growth under their belt with 11 more enroute to Cleveland. This year was about getting depth on the roster with young talent. Half our starters are on IR and our "depth"players alone beat them up. I love it. Mangini will continue the "process" and the remainig games I look forward to and cant wait for next year.

I know Mangini scares Browns fans but he has stuck to his plan and it will work. "Progress" is what you want to see in the upcomming games and we will. Ill eat crow if Im wrong(but Im not).

Wow, what a game. I was there, it was not cold, the squeeler fans left with their yellow towels between their legs. Black and Gold are the colors of the NO Saints. The squeelers colors are black and YELLOW. Too much Iron City beer makes you color blind. In the words of the Browns fan that "bumped" into the pittspuke fan while leaving and was berated about his lack of hospitality, "we don't what you here, you are not welcome here, and you need to stay the hell in pukesburgh". To all pittspuke fans, stay out of Cleveland if you don't want to be abused. Leave that to your father and your siblings AT HOME!

This is interesting reading these posts, as I'm not a fan of either team really, but I'd have to say I've seen much more loyalty, hospitatility, and football knowledge come from Browns fans than from Steelers fans. A lot of Steelers fans I've encountered can't name 5 Steelers players not named Roethlisberger or Polamalu. Many of them all seem to come back to that same defense of "We have more championships". Those Lombardi trophies didn't seem to help them Thursday night. They can talk all they want about how great their team is and how terrible the Browns are, but the fact is that terrible Browns team, just handed them a butt-whooping. Another note, and I've been to some Browns games, never against the Steelers though. The Steelers fans and team members claim their terrible towel as something sacred, etc. and their fans wave it around like crazy at their games, which is one thing. But, I noticed a lot of terrible towel waving at the game in Cleveland. That would really piss me off is I was at my team's home stadium and there were a bunch of jackasses waiving their teams towels around, obstructing my view of my team. Fans should be able to root for their team whereve they play, but leave the towels in Pittsburgh.

It's also funny how Pittsburgh fans are claiming that now Cleveland fans are coming out of the woodwork. It's funny how 10-15 years ago, I don't really remember seeing anybody in Pittsburgh gear, ever since 2005, it's everywhere. Yet, I haven't seen a lot over the past couple weeks. Hmm...

I've been a Steelers fan since I was born (1964) my dad has season tickets since 1969 (Sec 108 Seats 5,6) and still does. Fair weather fans are a dime a dozen and yes, there was more then ever Browns shirts and jackets since the game. Just like when DeBartlo brought the 49ers, everyone was a 49ers fan, and then when Cleveland was winning, all the Browns and Indian fans. Just like the Cavs and the Pens (I remember listening to the Pens on my grandfathers short wave radio in his attic because WKST wouldn't pick up on a normal radio). Yes winning brings the fans, even at the Steelers games, but some of them are just on the band wagon until the team starts losing. ex: Indians. Happens in every sport and every town. Notice all the Yankees gear around town now? So don't bad mouth the ones that suffered through the tough times with the band wagon ones. I'm also a proud Pirates fan.

AXLE,
Thanks for the props. The fact is that pittspuke fans come out of the woodwork if they have a winning year, but retreat to the trailer when things go bad. Cleveland fans ALWAYS stay loyal, no matter how putrid the team or season. pittspuke fans are really irraitating when they show up in Cleveland anticipating a victory. They start in the parking lots and continue throughout the game. Last year was quite memorable. The annoying yellow diaper wavers at the end of our aisle chose the wrong guy to agitate. They waved their yellow diapers in this dudes face and he pounded (no pun intended) them into dreams of Iron City beer and incest. He was thrown out for 5 games and upon return said "I was allowed to keep my tickets and PSL if I promised not to beat up the pittspuke people". It was sweet! Again, black and GOLD are the OFFICIAL colors of the New Orleans Saints. Look at the charter and you will find that the pittspuke colors are black and some variation of yellow.

Life2Short,

You seem like a legitimate, respectable fan. Nice job on the names. It is true, there are "fairweather" fans of teams of all sports, etc. I was commenting on my experiences over the last 20 years or so, since I started watching football. I'm not trying to badmouth the actual, respectable fans. I'm talking about the ones like PenguinBird. I've encountered more people like that rooting for Pittsburgh, then rooting for Cleveland. That, combined with the fact that I grew up in a household in which my dad was a Browns fan and the fact I've lived in NE Ohio my whole life, is why when it comes to Pittsburgh vs Cleveland, I always have to root for Cleveland. As I said, though, I'm not really a big fan of either team. My team is actually Minnesota, and has been since the days of Chris Doleman, Joey Browner, Darrin Nelson, Anthony Carter, Steve Jordan, and Keith Millard. They've broken my heart many times, which is possibly another reason why I can relate to Cleveland fans more than Pittsburgh fans, but I'll keep rooting for my team until the day I die. I'll also keep rooting for Cleveland, as long as they're not playing my Vikings.
