The Great Russian Nutcracker returns

YOUNGSTOWN — Moscow Ballet has added a gold medalist ballerina and several new characters to its “Great Russian Nutcracker,” which will return to Powers Auditorium on Friday.

Cristina Terentieva dances the role of Masha. She won the gold medal at the prestigious Varna International Ballet Competition in 2008. Cristina is partnered with Alexei Terentiev as the Nutcracker Prince.

Vladimir Troschenko, an honors graduate of the Bolshoi and Kirov academies, is the director.

New this year is a fantasy clock with wings of an owl that cast a shadow over the battle between the Soldiers and the Mice.

In addition to classical ballet dancing, the Moscow Ballet’s version of the holiday favorite is also known for its beautiful handcrafted backdrops and life-sized puppets. Valentin Fedorov, a prot g of the legendary designer Valery Leventhal of the Bolshoi Theatre, designed the backdrops and puppets. Fedorov is art director at the Chuvashia State Theater.

Friday’s performance at Powers will include dozens of local dancers who were selected by the ballet company.

The cast of local dancers is as follows:

Snowflakes: Cecilia Schuler, Chloe Housteau, Ashley Rafacz, Mackenzie Goodin, Hannah DeGenaro, Kendra DeWitt, Chelbey Trump, Abigail Whaley, McKala Lehman, Alyssa Swank, Amanda Wilson, Brianna Phillips, Marie Mauro, Caitlin Slattery, Anna Ohlin and Gabriela Romano.

Party Guests: Mallory Wardle, Morgan Wardle, Lexi Mauro, Laura Josten, Hannah Frisone, Alyssa Metzler, Elena Slemons, Taylor Myers, Sophia Schuler, Victoria Mollenkopf, Gianna Colella and Katie DeGenaro.

Butterflies: Lauren Owens, Danielle Goodin, Kaila Frisone and Holly Vavlas.

Mice: Megan Deskin, Macy Metzger, Hannah Weingart, Juliana Kreatsoulas, Lauren Stebelton, Hailey Domkowski, Lisandra Stebner and Liana Pregi.

Angels: Brianna Slemons, Jen Mullally, Kassie Kudler, Abbey Sheronovich, Mackenzie Wardle, Victoria Valko, Sarah Swank, Haleigh Combs, Kylee Dawson, Jenn Horn, Emily Degenova and Katie Rubesa.
