The former congressman can register to vote immediately upon his release, but can he run for elected office?
YOUNGSTOWN — After ex-U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. gets out of federal prison Wednesday, he won’t exactly be a free man.
As part of his sentence, Traficant will be on supervised release for three years.
Shortly after Wednesday, Traficant will meet with federal probation office officials in downtown Youngstown at the Thomas D. Lambros Building and United States Courthouse. Ironically, when he was a congressman, Traficant was instrumental in getting the federal building located in Youngstown.
Debra White of the federal probation office in Youngstown couldn’t be reached to comment on Traficant.
At that meeting with probation officials, the terms of Traficant’s reporting and supervision will be determined, said Richard J. Billak, chief executive officer of the Community Corrections Association.
CCA is a Youngstown-based company that operates a halfway house for inmates, including numerous federal prisoners.
During those three years of supervised release, Billak said:
• Federal probation officials will do periodic checks of Traficant’s residence in Poland for weapons.
• Traficant won’t be permitted to be around other convicted felons, which is standard operating procedure for any federal ex-con.
• If Traficant wants to travel outside Ohio, he would need approval from federal probation officials.
• If Traficant wants to live elsewhere he could put in a request to relocate, but it would have to be for a legitimate reason.
Because of Traficant’s age, 68, he won’t be required to find employment upon his release, Billak said.

We have not seen the last of Jim Traficant. I don't think he has lost his fire and lookout when he gets fired up again.
We already have seen the last of Jimbo! He's a washed up 68 year old corrupt ex-con without a job. Hope his paintings are good enough to go on display at the Canfield Fair he might make a few bucks for bread and butter...
Of course he can run for public office, and he should. He'd blow any other candidate, including Fisher and Ryan, right out of the water (since they're all wet anyway).
"Traficant won’t be permitted to be around other convicted felons" That means he can't go to Washington, he would be surrounded by felons. I hope he gets a show on 570 WKBN. I hope they cancel Limbaugh and fill the time with Jim. I would not have to change the channel everyday at noon.
Welcome home Jimbo!!! There have been people that have did far worst than he did and didn't do ONE day in jail. That is a good idea "what the heck" about radio is this a rumor or just your personal point?
Convicted felons can't hold office.
Non convicted felons do
Federal Office Holders
The Constitution requires that members of the House and Senate fulfill three requirements:
•All members of the House must be at least 25 years old, and members of the Senate must be at least 30 years old.
•Members of the House must have been a U.S. citizen for at least seven years, and members of the Senate must have been a U.S. citizen for at least nine years.
•They have to be an "inhabitant" of the state "when elected."
As a result, according to the Congressional Research Service, committing a crime cannot constitutionally disqualify someone from serving in Congress. And the state has no say in determining whether or not someone is qualified to serve in the House or Senate:
CRS: [S]ince a State does not have the authority to add qualifications for federal offices, the fact of conviction, even for a felony offense, could not be used to keep a candidate off of the ballot under State law either as a direct disqualification of convicted felons from holding or being a candidate for office, or as a disqualification of one who is no longer a “qualified elector” in the State. Once a person meets the three constitutional qualifications of age, citizenship and inhabitancy in the State when elected, that person, if duly elected, is constitutionally “qualified” to serve in Congress, even if a convicted felon.
You shouldn't be allowed to hold office with a dead cat on your head.
i will vote for jim, forever
Might1, just my opinion, but Jim was alawys on WKBN before and people seem to like him on there. I know I did.
I'll be d*mned if I ever vote for Tim Ryan, anyone who atleast believes in America and is conscious will get my vote before that party puppet does.
