Phantoms to conduct tryouts for PA announcer, national anthem singers

Published: Fri, August 21, 2009 @ 10:01 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN – The Youngstown Phantoms are in search of vocal and musical talent to help rock the Covelli Centre this upcoming hockey season.

The Phantoms will be auditioning both to fill the public address announcer role and to find national anthem performers from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St., downtown.

Candidates for the PA announcer should be talented, witty, personable and able to work all home games, including possible playoff games, during the 2009-2010 USHL season. This will be a part-time paid position, with complimentary Phantoms tickets as part of the compensation package.

Whoever secures this position will be responsible for announcing specific game details, in-game promotions, intermission activities, fan prompts and other special events. The announcer will be asked to attend pre-game production meetings and establish in-game signature calls and traditions for Phantoms fans. Applicants should make an effort to create a unique sound for Phantoms home games.

Potential announcers should meet the following requirements: comfortable on a microphone in front of large crowds, knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the game of hockey, able to take direction and think clearly in high-pressure situations, able to stick to a script and improvise when necessary, attentive to detail with excellent verbal communication skills, and willing to work as part of a team. A background in sports announcing or other varieties of voice talent is preferred.

On the day of the audition, please submit a résumé and any relevant footage of prior announcing/hosting work. Call Director of Community Relations Kelly Carroll at 330.747.7825 for more information on the position.

The Phantoms are also seeking talented musicians to perform the national A\anthem before select home games during the 2009-2010 season.

Anthem performers will not be paid, but will be given four complimentary tickets valid for the game(s) at which they perform. The Phantoms ask that musicians be prepared to perform only the American national anthem (“The Star-Spangled Banner”) at the audition.

The Phantoms are a member club of the United States Hockey League (USHL), America’s only Tier I hockey league and premier developer of National Hockey League talent with more than 100 alumni on current NHL rosters.
