Ohio man arrested 146 times since 1998

Published: Mon, August 17, 2009 @ 3:50 p.m.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Authorities in Cincinnati say Bennie Crabtree is the most-arrested man in Hamilton County.

Records show he has been arrested 146 times since 1998, when the county’s record-keeping system was updated. Veteran police officers say he was arrested many more times in the decades before that.

Crabtree’s record includes criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct and theft. Police say he steals food and intrudes in places such as the University of Cincinnati, hospitals and businesses. He’s never done anything serious enough to be sent to prison, however.

Because of jail overcrowding, he’s now often released hours after arrest.

Police say the 61-year-old man has lived mostly on the streets and has some mental problems.

A social worker says Crabtree is lonely.

Basically they are saying it's ok to steal if you are lonely and have mental problems...What if everbody did what Crabtree did..Just goes to show what a joke the legal system is.

146 arrests in a little over a decade takes skill. It's sad that someone lives in conditions like that especially the mentally ill. Sounds like he just needs a friend or family to give him a hand, guidance, and some company.

bigsleazy, At no point is this article saying it's ok to steal if you are lonely and have mental problems. They are saying that this isn't that far out of the ordinary for people who have lived on the streets for years with mental issues.

Yeah, like the writer inexplicably points out, Bennie is said to be lonely. Bennie's not the only one with mental challenges where this story and some who commented on it are concerned.

The police should be able to find an organization that can help this guy. If he has mental problems why isn't he committed to a mental hospital? It don't make any sense to keep arresting him.
