‘Tea party’ speakers urge Valley to ‘take back government’

Published: Sat, August 15, 2009 @ 12:05 a.m.

CANFIELD — For two hours, a half-dozen speakers stood in the gazebo on the Canfield green and called on folks from the Mahoning Valley to “take back government” from the Obama administration and other Washington politicians.

“Now he wants health-care legislation pushed through before anyone can read it,” said Dr. Donald K. Allen of Boardman, a veterinarian who’s planning to run next year as a Republican against U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson, D-6th, of St. Clairsville.

“It can’t be Chicago politics as usual. We need to put the brakes on [health-care reform] before we experience the greatest train wreck in history.”

Allen drew applause from the crowd of about 500 people on the perils of health care reform, but the crowd attending the Tri-County “Tea (Taxed Enough Already) Party” also cheered when Allen talked about the cost of frivolous lawsuits, which he said clog court dockets and jack up the cost of health- care premiums.

He said anyone who works in a hospital can tell you how hospitals are overwhelmed by people who don’t have health insurance, don’t know how to take care of themselves and use the emergency room because they know it will be free.

“We already pay for these people now. How will nationalized health care change that except to lead to bloated health-care bureaucracy?” he asked.

In countries with government health care, the length of time between seeing a specialist and having surgery is three months, Allen said.

Obama, on television this week, has countered that fears about health-care reform are being blown out of proportion by conservative talk show hosts and that he is only calling for a government health care option, not elimination of private health care.

Henry Nemenz, who operates 17 area Save-A-Lot stores and three IGA stores, said he blames the government for failing to control monopolies such as Wal-Mart the way it used to, and the result has been lost jobs among Wal-Mart competitors and suppliers not willing to meet Wal-Mart price demands.

Goshen Township farmer Roger Martig said life on a farm taught him fundamentals about living within his means that Obama and others don’t seem to understand.

Many people have worked on his farms over the years during their high school years, and they frequently stop to see him now and tell him “‘How you doing, Uncle Roger? You taught me how to work,’ and I am proud of that.”

He added that members of Congress are the ones with the health problem. They can’t read because they don’t read the legislation they’ve been approving, can’t add and subtract (“I know you can’t borrow yourself rich), they’re blind (“They want you to go green, but green’s not green. It’s going to make everything red) and they’re deaf (“They can’t hear the people like us.”)

“This country has seen moral decay,” Martig said. “Look at young people. Look at Congress. Nobody tells the truth.”

Bill Johnson of Warren called on Americans to get involved so that the health-care legislation and the cap-and-trade provisions of the energy bill designed to cap the amount of greenhouse gas emitted by companies don’t become law.

“We’re taking it [government] back for the highest-ranking people in the land: we the people,” he said.

“They are spending at a rate which will leave our great grandchildren to pick up the tab.”

Nancy Young of Cortland said she thinks events such as the “tea party” should alert more people to the expansion of government intrusion in Americans’ lives.

“I think too many people have no idea what’s going on. We need to be in the streets, in Washington.”

Perry Chickonoski of Struthers said the he’s concerned that a proposal for cap-and-trade provision in the energy bill that would require energy audits on homes would destroy property values in places such as“Chickonoski said the idea of conserving energy and reducing greenhouse emissions is a good idea, and he tries to do his part, but Congress should not “force people” to conserve energy.

Ron Seidle of Columbiana said after the TEA Party was over that discussions such as the one in Canfield on Friday are necessary because of the cost of the legislation being approved.

“I’m angry at all the insane spending,” he said.

What bothers me most is we are passing every legislative bill that comes before Congress, spending like there is no tomorrow, and chiding the people for raising objections.

What happened to the days of intelligence in Congress, or of listening to the people?

We should all fear the outcome of what our Congressmen are now doing. Voting them out in the next election will be too late.

There are bills going through congress that are so large and complex that they cannot be throroughly read nor understood when they come up for vote. Do we want politicians voting on the basis of a one-page synopsis and stirred-up emotions?

I remember a time in days gone by that people from all walks of life knew the value of a dollar and would work for it . Today far too many want it all given to them . Somebody has to pay for what they are giving away . Sadly it will be on the backs of the workers who toil for everything they get who will be expected to pay for those who refuse to toil . If Obama gets his way taxes will spiral to pay for his spending with no ceiling in sight .

The bottom line is that we need to stimulate economic growth and not suppress it . Tax dollars taken from the private sector will control economic growth to the point that there will be none . How can jobs be created when government has taxed away all incentive and opportunity for job creation ?

I'm a Tea Party volunteer; we are law abiding American citizens exercising our 1st Amendment Rights. Most of us are Independents, not GOPers. It's going to take us a long time to take our country back because both major political parties' are attempt to transform America into a communist state. Every one is welcome to join us, White, black, red, brown, yellow, libs, conservatives, rich, poor, middle class, Democrats, Republicans, Independents, union members, non-union members. We are not thugs, anarchists, not paid to participate, or terrorists! ACORN is currently posting on Craigslist for workers ($600.00) a week to attend protests. Free transportation incl. Tea Partiers supplied their own transportation and work at regular jobs. We are responsible, self-relient, concerned Americans paying our way and serving society. Nancy Pelosi said she is a proponent of disruption, etc. (as long as they aren't Tea Partiers).

Perhaps if we changed our system of government we wouldn't have a couple of years of partisan politics and what some may consider a rush to get bills passed.

The two party system is not working for America when one party rules in both the executive and legislative branches. So when Republicans held both branches for 10 years straight, they ramrodded anything through that they wanted.

Now people like the TEA Party are in an uproar because the Democrats, knowing they had no power for the past 10 years, need to get all the legislation passed during the next few months before the election cycle begins and while they hold all the cards.

My idea is simple; When a politial party holds Congress, Senate and President, the legislative branch that is closest to being led by the opposing party would automatically recieve a one vote majority. A handicap. That way in order to ramrod anything through, they would need to convert at least two members of the opposing party to join their ranks on a vote to get a simple majority.

This would level the playing field and make everyone play together and do things that will benefit the American people instead of benefit one group or another.

Tea parties are OK if they did and do what they say . BUT it all seems to be one sided and following the GOP party ( Rush, Beck, Hannity) of NO NO NO. Were where they when we were killing thousands and thousands of innocent people looking for WMD???? . It was all right that the GOVERNMENT (Bush & Chaney) had their hands in my pocket then . But I guess that was OK . But God forbid that we would help someone . But we all have the right say what we want to. But this (the tea parties) seem to be something else.

The roots of the tea parties can go back to what Ron Paul did in his campaign. There are a lot of gop people in it but it was started by both liberal and conservative libertarians back in '07 who were railroaded by hannity and the republican party. it wasn't until the Bush bailouts that it really started to gain traction. The "stimulus" also added to frustrations so people protested on tax day. Now there are so many things to protest they have trouble getting out a clear message at these protests.

The basic message is freedom through free markets, low taxes, and small government. The tea parties have much of the same problems the Ron Paul supporters did during his campaign, they fight even between themselves because its based on principles not on specific issue stances. So there is a large disagreement even within the tea parties, some people are the crazy anarchist ones and others are just soccer moms and nascar dads who see the national debt, social security, cap and trade, nationalized health care, and memories of the 70's and that scares the crap out of them. Most of the people in the tea parties have never been to a protest or done anything political before in their life.

Borylie, I like how you ask for people to tell you what they believe. I'm a conservative libertarian and disenfranchised (Ron Paul) republican. I see no difference between neocons and progressive liberals. I hated Bush especially his second term, I hate Hannity, Limbaugh makes me laugh but he's too partisan and it's just a political game for him, I disagree with Beck on the war but I think he does a good job of research and pointing people in the right direction to research for themselves, I dislike Sarah Palin I think she's just riding off the vice president thing, I contribute money to Peter Schiff's campaign for senator in Connecticut, I also contribute to Campaign for Liberty. I believe the Federal Reserve should be audited and I wish to see it abolished. So to sum up I hate both parties really.

A couple points:
Everyone stop getting your information from network television and cable news and use your brains.

- "So maybe you are living in the goverment past of the RUSH , Beck crap. He won by 68%"
Who won by 68%? Obama won 52% of the popular vote, and that is the one that means more. Bush lost the popular vote and still won the presidency. Does that make sense? You express yourself like an armless mute.

- "We all know Bush lied,"
Please tell me what Bush lied about. Lying involves intent. Did Clinton lie when he said the same things to the Pentagon? Did the intelligence sector lie when they were divulging the perceived information? Was England lying when they had the same intelligence too? Did the other countries lie about the perceived threat? Or was it just dubya? He got up there, in all his cunning and deviance, and said we must invade Iraq because they have wmd's and everyone must do what I say.

You go**amn people make me laugh...and then cry.

- If people want to envoke constitutional liberties so what. There were rallies everyday against Iraq calling for dubya's impeachment. That is ok, that is America.

- If anyone really thinks for one second that Obama has made positive long term decisions for the American economy, you are wrong. When I say long-term I mean about 10-15 years out. The principles of our economy, common sense, and history can prove that. The generation in their 30's right now is absolutely screwed, period. History will be the ultimate judge and it has only been 7 months, true, but there is nothing to show otherwise. The guy is trying to be superman but, and I know this may shock you, he is only human, and not that cool. His clean talk and brains may have made him a big hit, but the scrutiny of the presidency is almost too much for a human being to handle.

Thanks for your response, but I still don't know what a liberal/democrat is. But,I'm with you in disliking both parties and to be more specific, politicians. However,I'm a conservative and if the republicans could ever act like consevatives, then I believe they are more closely aligned with my ideology. Briefly,I'm agnostic, see both sides of the abortion argument and believe in helping the TRULY needy. I do not believe in giving my hard earned money, my years of making good decisions (never drank alcohol, never did any drugs, saved and planned for my future) and giving any part of it to those who did just the opposite of what I did. Liberals want to do this and with my money. They want to control the country and the world and accomplish this by creating a dumbed down populace who need the government. Liberals are what the word says it is,liberal. Drugs, alcohol,no respect for themselves(low class)or others, basically anything goes. I don't want this type of world. Rush Limbaugh isn't a politician and a true, blue conservative, this is why I'm a Limbaugh fan. I don't care what other countries think of the USA. We are the best and when you can't be the best you hate the best. Same as liberals, when it is impossible to raise the lazy, uneducated, lowlifes to middle class, then take from those who are ambitious and hard working and bring them down to their level. So what is a liberal/democrat in the opinion of others?

I think both ends of the political spectrum should continue supporting and protesting the legislation in Washington so we can have an honest debate with the citizens deciding, not the bums in Washington.

In the past, it was every 2 years when the citizens made the decisions, but the TEA Party movement has changed that. Now every tea party or town hall could have repercussions come Election Time and/or when our Congressmen do vote on bills!

From some of the comments it seems that some people think we are a democracy, which we aren't, we are a republic.

Since we are a republic and not a true democracy we are to hold our representatives accountable. The tea parties are exactly what we need to hold the representatives accountable to the people they represent.

If we were a true democracy we would have mob rule by the whims of the people not by the rule of law.

Bush's spending was uncalled for. No Child Left Behind = money down the drain. It's the states job to handle education, there is no need for a federal dep of education. It's surely not results we are getting, the US dep of edu keeps getting bigger but we keep getting worse and worse schools. You can't just throw money at the problem, it'll be too late before the politicians figure that out though.

Obama's spending is also uncalled for and it is literally scary how much he has robbed and wishes to rob the US tax payer.

Obama's curent agenda will add $9.3 trillion to the national debt, doubling it in six years and nearly tripling it in 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

Last fiscal year, the deficit was $459 billion. For this fiscal year, it was $569 billion when Mr. Obama took office. Under his proposals, another $1.276 trillion will be added to the deficit this year, for a total of $1.845 trillion.

The CBO says deficits will fall for three years to $658 billion, still nearly 50% larger than any past deficit. After that, deficits go back up every year, reaching the trillion-dollar a year mark again in nine years. By 2019, the debt would reach 82.4% of GDP, a level not seen since 1947. With astonishing candor, even Peter Orszag, the president's budget director conceded these levels of deficits and debt are "unsustainable."

Federal spending will under Mr. Obama top $4 trillion this year. This translates into 28.5% of GDP -- a level exceeded only at the height of World War II. According to the president's plans, spending will thereafter slow for three years, but then grow faster than the economy for the next seven years and beyond. Spending rises by $3.1 trillion from 2009-19, including $911 billion for legislation signed during his first two months in office, including the stimulus bill and the expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (and not including interest on the mushrooming debt).

Nonsocialist,

Food for thought- what if interest rates skyrocket through inflation or the fed having to battle inflation? Say it roughly doubled (possible, look at the 1980's). So instead of paying ballpark $400 billion on interest the government would have to pay $800 billion, that would cripple us. That would be adding $400 billion more to the deficit every year. Think about that too when you hear a doubling of the national debt!

Most of the pap I read here today had little to do with what was empathized at that meeting Friday.
I didn't read about it in Vindy, or rely on TV news coverage (both local stations) and certainly not by listening to talk radio or supposed right wing conservatives.

I feel qualified to comment because I took the time to attend that "TEA party". I don't consider myself a Dem, GOP'er, Indy or any other particular party. I try to vote for the best but sometimes am forced to go with the lesser of the worst.

I didn't agree with all of what I heard, and some of the speakers attempted to place blame on just those in power now.

What I did leave with was a sense that more people are becoming aware that government as it is practiced now is broken. As long as the people just talk about why that is, very little change will happen. Action needs to be taken. Be that by marches on the Capitol(s), letters to the representatives, phone calls, emails and speaking to the uninformed. Once again, the key is ACTION.

Please use these posts for good purpose and not for purposeless individual vendettas.

It's a social event for them, without considering how not doing anything about healthcare will only lead to problems for their children and grandchildren. But again, a lot of the "tea partiers" probably figure that they won't be around to see it so why should they care. Matter of fact that is a comment that I heard made by one of the attendees. Some just vote for the D or R and have no idea other than the typical "republicans are only for the rich" or "democrats want to raise my taxes" uninformed saying people have.

Just so you know, ProAmerican, the Republicans who were claiming the law included a "Death Panel" have backed off of it. Turns out it was a misinterpretation of an idea Newt Gingrich was promoting in June.

In reality Newt knows a lot about healthcare. He patented a move called "wait till your wife gets cancer and have her sign divorce papers while she's in the hospital." That has to count for something, right?

Now...now...No need to get defensive. You are allowed to express your thoughts, misguided as they are, without someone resorting to an insulting response. It's more entertaining to have an intellectual discussion without your comrade falling back on tired barbs and jabs. I think most see it as a sign of helplessness. Peace out.

BTW, I see your Newt and raise you one Bill Clinton and one John Edwards.

Death Panels was a poor way the Republican tried to defeat Obamacare.

Here's the reality of what Obama, Pelosi, and Frank were trying to do. They were going to set up a public option that would "compete" with private insurance industry. However, since the government plan has no incentive to turn profits or even prevent losses it would eventually put companies who have those constraints out of business. Obama has said that nationalized healthcare cannot be achieved instantly, it would take atleast a decade. This is how they would achieve getting the private sector out of it.

Since resources are limited as they always are, society cannot collectively afford to have individuals get health care that doesn't provide enough bang for the buck to society. Therefore there would be need to be some policy and policy maker that decides what procedures are worth it for the collective to afford.

We as individuals also have a mechanism much like this. We decide whether the procedure is worth it for our budget and also our effort. The decision though is decided upon what is good for the individual without regard to society.

Some act as if rationing is not a reality, but it is in both nationalized and individualized systems. We as individuals can ration more to our healthcare or less, we can ration more for fancy cars or we can ration for travel. The question is who is doing the rationing or who do you want to do the rationing?

When the government does the rationing it is done with the collective in mind, when you ration it is with the individual in mind. Which has your interest at heart?

This must go on record as one of the most poorly written Vindicator articles to date because people's comments don't even refer to the implied content...

Ok, where to begin...
It's just really sad that such a hard working, blue color town would get duped by the media and are so blindly willing to accept whatever nonsense is being fed to them from the major "News" networks. Really?? Do you lack all reasoning skills?

Folks, you are fighting against something that could be very good for a lot of people and you're still not getting it: if you already have healthcare and you like it - NOTHING WILL CHANGE FOR YOU. If it's tax money you're crazed about - guess what - you are already paying for people without health care when they walk through those ER doors as a last resort. A LAST RESORT, as in, this person would die if they did not seek immediate care. If people had the health care we all deserve, the non-emergency emergency visits would decrease in sight of the preventative care that would be available to them. Oh yeah! The people in jail who have committed a crime because they are mentally ill?? Yep, them too! If they had low or no cost health care and meds available to them, you wouldn't be paying for their jail time. WAKE UP. To live in a good society, it costs money. If you want to have the best healthcare, EVERYONE needs healthcare.

The results of a recent study came out from the EPA saying that the United States' life expectancy has risen a whole year. The Vindy posted a lame AP article with little insight into these findings. But, with a little more research I discovered that America is only ranked #50 in the world for the highest life expectancy. Yikes! That's where we are and claim to have the most expensive health care system? (Canada is 8 and France is 9, by the way)

Vindy, your article, in a word, stinks. Citizens of this valley are cited with comment but who are these people and why should we listen to them? Your commenters have no credibility and you report it as if it were actual fact. Also, you are pitting two diametrically opposed statements towards the same argument: Dr. Allen wants us to "take back America from the Government" but then Mr. Nemenz says that it's lack of government oversight that has caused Wal-Mart to become a monopoly. Huh??

Ok. FOX News isn't really the news and it's just one of many media outlets owned by one of the world's largest media conglomerates called News Corporation owned by Rupert Murdoch (who isn't even American, but Australian) which also happens to be a publicly-traded company. Guess what - they make more money when they get you to watch their crap...We all get it now, good.

This is all fine and dandy, but does anyone here know of any actual, and I mean real, points to the proposed healthcare reform? Anyone? Just one thing that is to change. Sad...

This is what they want to do (and it doesn't sound so bad to me):

* Make sure insurance companies can’t drop your coverage if you get sick or deny you care because you have a pre-existing condition.
* Prevent insurers from charging exorbitant co-pays, putting life-time or annual caps on your coverage, or denying you the opportunity to renew your coverage.
* Allow young adults to stay on their family coverage until age 26, make it illegal to charge women more for care, and ensure that companies cover preventative care that saves money in the long run.

If you want to see some low life journalism let's look at the Ed Show on msnbc.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZ3tCe...

To think any channel is balanced is complete fallacy, NBC might be perhaps the most biased network I have ever seen. Fox atleast gives some of the things I believe a fair shake.

Btw I like listening to a channel who atleast gives some of my views a fairer shake.

Search...You don't get it. Fix Noise is not a news channel. The talking heads there say what Rupert Murdoch pays them to say. The reason some people think Fix is reporting what they themselves believe is because they will tell the same lies over and over again.

Fix Noise hammered Bill Clinton 24/7 for eight years. According to them he never did one thing right. They praised Bush aka Fredo 24/7. The guy never did anything wrong. As soon as Obama got the nomination they started in on him 24/7 and will do so till the day he leaves office. Did you even watch the last video I posted? They started in with their socialist crap day one. Does it look like to you they they are giving the guy and his plans to fix the mess he was handed chance? Be honest.

There are some people if they hear something enough times they think it must be true.

I'm a bit nonplussed. So far there have been a lot of comments full of glaring generalizations about everything except the issues of this article, but there has not yet been an intelligent, well-thought out argument, for or against healthcare reform.

Apparently this community (i.e. proamerican, et al.) is only interested in defending what's been piped through their televisions at them by large corporations with no real interest in the people they pretend to serve. It's no surprise that these people talking at you through the TV have been told what to say because the pharmaceutical lobbyists (the ones with all the money. not us, remember?) paying these media organizations to say what they've been saying so the big companies can keep the dough rolling in. It sounds like people are lacking critical thinking skills, can't think for themselves and are happy to go along with whatever everyone else is because it's easier.

Let me ask you, do any of you even know or understand the underlying ideals or theories of socialism? Do you realize that most of what you encounter each day is socialized? The water department, the fire department, the police, the city school district, the highway system, the state hwy patrol, the internet, the FCC, the National Weather System, must I go on?

If you aren't a very rich person who has everything you would ever need inside a little, self-maintaining compound, there is absolutely no reason you would not want to invest in your own well-being. Seriously, gang. SRSLY.

Again, Vindy. Lame article.

I'm going to be sort of frank. Neither side will ever be conviced of the other side and not because they don't try.

This is an argument over utilitarianism vs. libertarianism.

Ultimate utilitarianism leads to totalitarianism, ultimate libertarianism leads to anarchism. The question is where on that continuum are we? Some people feel we are becoming tilted more toward utilitarism than we should be and that is why so many have been fired up.

Honestly it would be pointless for either of us to go on, get_a_bike because it sounds like whatever either of us say is going to fall on deaf ears or be construed incorrectly, as many of us have learned.

I was at today's Akron Tea Party. The theme was a government out of control who has taken too much of our money already and still isn't done with us. They want to fund every program they can think of until they have total control of us. Although the news of how far gone this country already is (Federal Reserve Bank, IRS, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid) can be pretty depressing, there was a real feeling of hope and conviction that WE THE PEOPLE will not let them continue down this path of destroying the country our forefathers fought and died for. I hope some of the speeches make it to youtube. I doubt whether the media will cover it, even though there were over 7,000 people there.

Every time I see or hear these teabaggers,I have to chuckle because they are so damn hypocritical it`s hilarious.Where the hell were they the 8 yrs that Bush was in office? That`s when they should have been protesting his policies.Likely they were working at GOP headquarters on his campaigns.Concerned about the Constitution they scream?Their buddy Dick Cheney trampled and spit all over it.Not a peep from the baggers though.Taxes? How many billions in tax breaks to the top 1% did their buddy Bush sign while in office? It seems to me that a vast majority on these so called "patriots" woke up on January 21st and screamed,"Oh my Lord ,we have a BLACK president it`s the END of the world." ARRRRGGGHHHH!!!.Hopefully you baggers can survive for the next 8 yrs without having a complete breakdown because as your buddy Bush was so fond of saying,"I won and I have political capital and I`m going to spend it" Rock on President Obama.Spend that capital because the Republicans are so heavily invested in failure they don`t have the needs of the nation as their priority.Looking forward to the next teabagging event.Laughter is so good for the soul.
