Scrappers scrap Traficant Release Night promotion

Published: Wed, August 12, 2009 @ 1:00 p.m.

NILES — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers are scrapping its “Traficant Release Night” promotion.

The team will make an official statement Thursday. But Dave Smith, the Class A short-season minor league baseball team’s general manager, confirmed today that the event is canceled.

The event was scheduled for Sept. 2, the day ex-U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. is to be released from federal prison after serving seven years for racketeering, bribery, obstruction of justice and tax evasion.

After the event was included in a Sunday article in The Vindicator, the Scrappers were “flooded with e-mails and phone calls” objecting to the promotion, Smith said.

Its good to see the Scrappers have the common sense to see that homage to convicted felons is not the modus operandi of the Valley from here on out. Thanks Dave, for your thoughtfulness.

Thank god they came to their senses - he's an embarassment to the majority of people who live here - we don't need or want that kind of publicity. Courage? What a joke - he was a crook and a liar.

What does the public care? If they don't like it, don't go.

Excellent marketing move! Don't believe the lie that even bad publicity is good. Bad publicity is what it is, Bad. They may have heard of you now, but it puts a bad taste in their mouth. You are now taking advantage of both bad and good publicity. It will serve you much better in the long run. Besides the article said only 90+ took advantage of the program last time, not a hit by any means.

I am just wondering how this is bad publicity.. Can someone explain it? It seems the only negatives are coming from the people who no longer live here, and don't need the help Mr Traficant can offer. ( I hope everyone calling him Jim or Jimbo knows him personally, otherwise it is rude and disrespectful.) If Mr Traficant is so bad, then shouldn't we do away with everything he helped bring to the valley, starting with the Covelli centre and Cafaro field. that seems to make sense, right? Just wondering out loud....

Level_Headed - When our congressman talks about farting on the floor of the House and in testimony, I think we can throw 'rude and disrespectful' out the window.

Very sad this occurred, but we'll let the voters decide when he gets elected and takes down Charlie Wilson!

While I was not a big Traficant fan to start with, Lets remember that this valley still elected him even after we knew of him, and probably would again if we could. It's the Government Machine that sent him away. If Cafaro had any "stones" they would go forward and let you decide for your self weather you want to go. Or maybe we need Barock and the machine to decide that too!
