Suspect in slayings glorifies movie gangsters on Net

By Ed Runyan

WARREN — The 22-year-old city man charged with complicity to murder in the drive-by shooting deaths of an 11-year-old boy and a 26-year-old man April 13 had a MySpace page on the Internet in which he called himself “Young Montana” — a reference to the character Tony Montana from the 1983 movie “Scarface.”

The page for Marcus Yager, of Vine Avenue Northeast, also lists his hometown as “war city, dub [’W] town, murderville, Warren, Ohio.”

Police arrested Yager on Tuesday afternoon in the shooting that killed Lloyd McCoy, 11, of Wick Street Southeast, and Marvin J. Chaney, 26, of Fifth Street Southwest.

Another child, a nephew of Lloyd McCoy’s who lived at the house where the shooting took place — 2290 Wick St. S.E. — was hit in the shoulder by the gunfire but is recovering.

Lloyd McCoy, a sixth-grader at Warren’s Willard K-8 School, lived across the street from the shooting scene and was visiting at the time of the 9:50 p.m. shooting, which left as many as 30 bullet holes in the front of the home.

Police are still seeking other suspects and are not willing to discuss what role they believe Yager played in the crime, said Tim Bowers, acting police chief.

Yager was arraigned Wednesday afternoon in Warren Municipal Court, where he pleaded innocent to the two charges. Judge Thomas Gysegem ordered that Yager be kept in the Trumbull County Jail without bond.

He faces a penalty of 15 years to life on each count, if convicted. Yager will return to court within the next 10 days for a preliminary hearing.

Members of Marvin J. Chaney’s family said outside the court that they are hoping for justice.

“I want to see that justice is done for the McCoy family and the Chaney family,” said Shon Lacey, Chaney’s cousin.

“He lived a life that is not normal to some of the people, but he didn’t deserve this,” Lacey said of Chaney, who spent two years in prison starting in 2005 for cocaine possession and receiving stolen property.

Shauna Jackson, another cousin, said Chaney was “full of love.” She added, “Marvin loved nothing but his family, his children.”

She also said the way her cousin was killed — with gunshots fired through the walls of a house from a passing motor vehicle — was cowardly.

Yager’s MySpace page shows photographs of him with his young son and shows tattoos on his legs with the name of his son on one and the word “mob” on the other.

Yager says his favorite movies are “Shottas,” “Belly,” and “Paid in Full,” which are similar to “Scarface” in that they depict characters who live in the underworld of drug dealing, crime, violence and wealth.

“Scarface,” starring Al Pacino, is the fictional story of Tony Montana, a small-time hood who emigrates from Cuba to the U.S., connects with a Miami gangster and becomes the leader of a cocaine-smuggling empire.

What does the lack of a job, regulations or taxes have to do with pulling the trigger of a gun pointed at other human beings? It is what it is - an act of savagery. Such acts occurred centuries ago before movies such as “Shottas,” “Belly,” “Paid in Full,” and “Scarface” were around.

Wow...is this for real? Scarface? I mean it was a movie character. To much time on this young mans hands...Did he not see the end of the movie where Scarface was shot down like a ragging animal.

Man...it's a shame when the greatest hope/mentor for an individual is not God but a fictional character.
