Ryan, Brown tout federal legislation to retrain displaced workers

Published: Mon, April 13, 2009 @ 7:35 p.m.

WARREN — Displaced workers and those just looking to make a career change may soon have a new tool in the search for a more secure employment future.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown and U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, during a press conference at Kent State University’s Trumbull Campus, announced a workforce development plan that both men feel will prepare displaced auto workers and others in manufacturing for high-tech jobs.

Brown, D-Ohio, has introduced the bill in the Senate. Ryan of Niles, D-17th, is sponsoring identical legislation in the House.

Brown said the Strengthening Employment Clusters to Organize Regional Success — SECTORS — Act will partner companies with universities and local job development agencies to the particular company for job training in the skills that the given company may need.

“We do all this workforce training when people lose jobs, but it is not always focused on jobs that are available in the area. This will help do that,” Brown said this afternoon.
