YOUNGSTOWN — Bringing a resort casino to Ohio would generate 5,000 jobs with an average salary of $34,000, according to supporters of a ballot issue to allow operation of a gambling casino in Ohio.
Members of My Ohio Now were in Youngstown on Monday to promote Issue 6, Ohio’s Resort Casino, which will be on the November ballot.
Voting yes on Issue 6 in November means that the voter approves amending the Ohio Constitution to permit one casino in Southwest Ohio.
The $600 million casino would be built on 95 acres in Clinton County, between Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton, said Dr. Bradford Pressman of My Ohio Now.
The resort would include a 1,500-deluxe-room hotel, Vegas-style gambling, restaurants and a golf course, among others.
With no such resort in Ohio, Pressman said he believes that all Ohioans and the economy could benefit from such a business being in the state.
The casino would pay a tax of up to 30 percent on its gross receipts. Those taxes are to be used for various expenses, and of remaining amounts, 10 percent will be distributed to Clinton County and the other 90 percent will be divvied up among the other counties.
Read the details on issue 6, and you'll vote NO. It's a bad deal for Ohioans.
According to this article, the proposed casino would not make a dime. It states that 30% of gross receipts would go to taxes and the remaining amount (70%) would be given to Clinton County and the other 87 counties at a 10% to 90% ratio (which is obviously incorrect - 70% plus 30% = 100%).
This is typical of today's journalists. They publish their items without analyzing what they are trying to communicate to the readers.
I am neither for nor against the casino at this time. I will take OldManGrump's suggestion and read the details on Issue 6.
Can't you read, or better yet check the web site at www.myohionow.com to read about issue 6. OK, 30% of gross revenues goes back goes back to 88 counties but the first 10% goes to clinton county for infer structure. roads, sewers, police and fire ect. THe Balance goes to the remaining 87 counties based on per capita. The State is just waiting to have this pass to get there share of another casino or slots at race tracks where they can get all the tax! But THE governor has to be able to say the people want casinos after this passes so he can act.
observant1, you're not very observant...
They are talking about the 30% being divided...so of the 30%, 10% goes to Clinton and the other 90 goes to the other counties...the casino makes 70% profit. I think most people on here know 70 + 30 = 100.
"This is typical of today's journalists. They publish their items without analyzing what they are trying to communicate to the readers."
I'm not a journalist, nor will I vote for this bill but I would say it's quite ironic for such a clueless, uneducated person to be saying this about other people.
Makes me scared that people like you are responsible for voting on such important issues in our state/nation.
From the 70% balance of Gross profit the have to pay wages, other operating expenses State taxes, fica, workers comp, city taxes, property taxes and construction cost, they will be the highest taxed company in the state.
The State has a $795 Million in a Budget short fall! Of that $250 Million is Medicaid for those wait in nursing homes waiting to be cover. The state can't raise taxes, so taxing Race tracks at 30% on slots is the only way out. It Happened in Pa. Indiana, Michigan and W Virginia. When they had a budget short fall they got casinos. Cincy area spends $800 million in gaming a year in 3 Indiana River Boats and in two race tracks with slot that just opened this spring. Indiana claims 40% of there revenues comes from Ohio. Thats why Penn Gaming from Philly Pa. that owns the Argocy River boat in Indiana, is funding NO ON 6 ads on TV and Radio to stop Issue 6, it all gets down to money. If you did $480 million a year would you want to loose 40% of you profits to a Ohio casino. DA! If you want other states telling what to do or take away your freedom of choice, don't vote for issue 6 or die in some nursing home waiting for care from your state.
I suggest you read http://www.noissue6.com/ as well as www.myohionow.com
Too much gray area for me to vote for it.
http://www.noissue6.com/ IS FUNDED BY PENN GAMING WHO OWNS THE ARGOCY RIVER BOAT CASINO IN INDIANA. They stand to loose 40% of there business if this casino opens, so do you believe what they print?. First an indian casino can't open in Ohio without fed land George Vonovich took care of that. Lake entertainment manages other indian casino for tribes but doesn't own them. There biggest business is THE WPT poker tournament on TV, they own 70% of the TV rights. There tax would go down to 25% if another tax paying casino opens. So then the counties would get 50% from two. Indians don't pay tax so that would not apply. There twisting the truth to suit them. Remember Penn Gaming owns Toledo Race Way, they were for Learn and Earn last time,in 06 when tracks wanted slots.
teterni - the NO PAY Taxes for Indians Casonos also does apply to this casino. That's what makes this casino idea so bad. They could end up paying ZERO taxes. Is that what their ad says? No, because they don't want you to know the truth. This is a gimick requiring a NO vote.
No it doesn't! read there web site, your, confused. anti gaming is saying if an indian casino opens.
but that will never happen both john mc cain and george vonovich have stopped off reservasion tribes from other states, they can not opening in ohio. Why do you think OHIO wineries couldn't ship wine to other state for years until last year when they changed the law. New York and Pa were lobbying our Senators not to change the law. ITS ALL ABOUT the Money.
Sorry tsterni, but you're the one that's wrong. OldManGrump is right on! The constitution change to allow this casino to be built, will create a loophole enabling the Indian casinos to open. The Indians DO NOT HAVE TO PAY TAXES, which mean this new casino will be able to match this amount. Why do you think the amendment is worded as it is; "up to 30% in taxes". If there was NO chance of a competing casino opening up in Ohio, the amendment would guarantee 30% a tax return.
Even if you think introducing gambling into Ohio is good like I do... the amendment says that this is the one casino. If we ever want one in Ohio anywhere close to here this has to be re-voted on with a new petition and amendment, which is dumb. Also, the casino goes directly between two cities that are doing well, so jobs are put on a side of the state where jobs are a million times easier to find than here. I'm not saying put the casino in an area where people have no money because that would be bad, but a location where the unemployed can have a job and those with money could afford it would make more sense.
Can't we just set something up that leaves it up to the Lottery to decide how many and where at, and the bill just specify the allotment of profit?
I know there is noway I'm driving that far just to keep money in Ohio. I would much rather drive about 45 minute to go to a casino. At first I was all about it, but now no. They need to rewrite the issue for not just one.
I am all for the Casino in Ohio, I just wish they would build one right here in Youngstown!!!!,hope it passes,I drive to mountaineer, and Indiana to play, having one here would be very convenient
My guess is that several of you found math to be way too hard with all those numbers and stuff.
It has to be fed land in trust for Ohio to get an Indian Casino! Because of George Vonivich 's Memo to John Mc Cain who is the chair of Indian afairs in In the dept of interior. No Indian Tribe that's Reservation is in another State can be granted Fed land in trust in another State that has no land to start with. No Land, No Indian Casino.
Empire Gaming just was rejected from Washington DC for the same thing in NY with Mohawk tribe from Oklahoma. Denied land in trust therefore no casino.
Tcat Your still Wrong! Todays Columbus Dispatch said it would be up to the attorney General to rule on the loop hole if an Indian Tribe ever got in Ohio. The Head of Myohionow in the same article, pledges to pay the 30% even if a indian tribe gets in Ohio Which slim chance.
Penn gaming from Pa. who owns Agrocy river boat casino in Indiana, is funding $40 million in TV ads "NO ON 6" to stop Myohionow. They claim 40% of there business comes from Ohio and they don't want to loose it. Vote "Yes on Issue 6 "! Don't let another State tell you what to do or take away you freedom of choice.
I agree, vote yes on issue 6, when you go to pa. or indiana , and I have been to both, you see more vehicles with ohio plates, keep the money in Ohio !!!!
Please vote FOR the casino. We may not see it on the ballot again. Once we get one and legalize gambling in Ohio, we will get more. STOP sending the money out of OHIO. Not just the gambling money, but the gasoline purchases, hotel costs, restaurant expenses, and so on. Think about it.
A vote in "desperation" on this garbage proposal is about the dumbest vote you can make. It would be like putting a band-aid on a severed arm.
