Update on storm-related food stamp assistance

Published: Fri, September 19, 2008 @ 2:54 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — Those seeking storm-related emergency food stamp assistance no longer need to obtain letters from Ohio Edison, the American Red Cross, or a local fire department or community agency verifying that they were without electric power for at least four hours, according to a Mahoning County Department of Job and Family Services official.

As authorized by the state, JFS will now use for eligibility determination purposes its own Ohio Edison-issued map showing areas that were without power for at least four hours after Sunday’s high winds, said Emmaline Adams, JFS program administrator.

Food stamp customers whose food spoiled in their refrigerators and freezers due to an extended power failure will receive food stamps to replace their lost food. Thursday will be the application deadline.

Applicants are urged to appear in person at JFS, 345 Oak Hill Ave., with their photo identifications.

Unless you can make your own food and sicne many can't they need soemtihng to help since losing a ton of food is not cheap to replace.

OldManGrump-yes we all did suffer the same losses but for you to say that the poor who are getting this help are freeloaders is completely wrong! If the burbs dislike Y-towners so much, why are it's citizens in our neighborhoods, standing in food giveaways? Why are they now shopping at Sav-A-Lot and Aldi's in our neighborhoods? If you have a gripe about this, call the governor. Did you know or do you even care that for many children here in Y-town, breakfast and lunch in school are their only meals? You lost $500 in food, I am sorry for that but it doesn't give you the right to talk about "poor people" that way. Before you make a comment like that again, think, there before the grace of God go I. Until you have walked in another person's shoes, you shouldn't judge anyone.

These people on this blog are stupid. People in youngstown work not everyone is on welfare and seek to get things free. Some of us work hard to get ahead in life. Old man grump needs to get a life if you don't like Youngstown leave the area period I don't care where you live you have a thing against the ytown area go away from here. What about all of your people that lie and get welfare and wic and all of the other free commodites of life and don't say they don't because they do.If you lost 5oo.oo worth of food then you don't need the food stamps give it to someone who needs it you obviously don't. I am sick of people like you that have a thing against the world stay in your own little hole and leave everyone else alone

This is Old News. The majority of sections of the City of Youngstown have been on food stamps for a second generation (and an Ohio Pass Card for free Healthcare, too); without any major storms either. Go up Market Street from Downtown to Indianola. Now that is what you call urban "Blight".

Yes we have our problems and we can't seem to fix them or want to but we can if we all made up our mind to do so.

moved from youngstown: Maybe the black people from y-town need to go where you live to see that their race can make it and does. Maybe that will give them a positive attitude, instead of the negative, poor me attitude. I believe anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it. Never give up, but that seems to be what many have done in Youngstown. I'm meaning everyone, not just one race. I'm not speaking for oldmangrump. But i'm sure there are many people who live in the "burbs" who can afford houses where you are talking about!
