Dann has 21 days to repay the money and further explain other expenses.
COLUMBUS — Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner has ordered former Attorney General Marc Dann to repay his campaign committee $40,610 for a security system and other improvements to his Youngstown-area home.
Brunner said Friday that expenses for Dann’s personal residence were not legal under an Ohio law that prohibits conversion of campaign funds for personal use.
The secretary of state’s office also requested that Dann explain how three other expenditures were necessary to fulfill his duty as attorney general. The expenses paid for by the committee include the purchase of a GMAC vehicle, five cellular phone plans, and “consulting” by Progressive Solutions Group that cost more than $26,000.
Dann resigned as attorney general in May in the wake of a sexual harassment scandal in his office and an admitted extramarital affair with a subordinate.
He has 21 days to repay the committee and clarify the necessity of the other expenditures. After that, the Ohio Elections Commission can refer findings to the county prosecutor for possible criminal charges.
