HOWLAND — Firefighters said the cause is unknown in a house fire that caused $25,000 in damages and took two departments to extinguish.

The Howland Fire Department responded to a call at 3529 Basswood Ave. N.E., shortly after 10 a.m. today where firefighters found “heavy fire conditions” throughout the dwelling, according to a report by the department. Assistance was provided by Bazetta Township, totaling 17 firefighters who worked to put out the flames.

No one was home, but a dog and a parrot were killed in the fire.

An investigation into the cause is under way.
