Valley tastes first sprinkling of autumn snow

Published: Tue, October 28, 2008 @ 12:00 a.m.

STAFF REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN — It was just a trace, but it was the first batch of snowflakes to fall this pre-winter season in the Mahoning Valley.

The little bit of snow that fell Monday is also a sign of things to come.

There is a chance of snow today and Wednesday, but no accumulation is expected, said Gary Garnet, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cleveland.

The Valley averages 0.1 of an inch of accumulated snow by this time of year.

It was only 15 years ago that 7.7 inches of snow fell on the Valley in October 1993.

It’s been about 10 degrees colder than usual during the last few days.

The high for today is supposed to be in the upper 30s. The average high for this time of the year in the area is 56 degrees.

On Thursday, the forecast calls for a high in the mid-50s.
