How's 158 MPG sound? The Equinox is in town

Published: Wed, October 22, 2008 @ 6:26 p.m.

It’s sure to be a busy weekend in the Valley for the Chevrolet Equinox.

Today from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Greenwood’s Hubbard Chevrolet and Greenwood Chevrolet in Austintown, patrons can take a look at the Equinox, which is powered by hydrogen fuel cells and averages an EPA-certified 158 miles per gallon of fuel.

An expert with also be on hand for a question-and-answer session.

“He’ll go through the whole nine yards on how this will be saving us gas and air and all that good stuff,” said Teri Simon, advertising director for Greenwood Chevrolet-HUMMER.

According to General Motors Lordstown, water vapor is the only emission the Equinox gives off.

The vehicle will be on display Friday for employees at the GM Lordstown plant to promote GM’s Project Driveway.

The Equinox will be on display from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the press is invited to take it for a test drive.

The purpose of Project Driveway is to put Equinox electric vehicles, powered by hydrogen fuel cells, into the hands of a variety of drivers to gain real-world experience and learning.

Test drivers are generally from southern California, Washington D.C., and the New York Metropolitan areas.

They are given the vehicles to drive for about two months.

Everything from the vehicle, fuel and insurance are provided for free in exchange for driver feedback.

Celebrities such as Jay Leno, as well as business partners Disney and Virgin Atlantic, are just some participating in the tests.

The Equinox will also be part of the Youngstown State University Homecoming Parade from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The parade will run along Fifth Avenue outside Stambaugh Stadium in Youngstown.

I think GM would be in a lot better financial shape today if they offered cars like these during the oil crisis of the 1970's.. or 1980's ... okay, maybe the technology wasn't around then. But they could have had more fuel efficient cars out 10 years ago. or 5.
