The Republican believes Obama is considering a redistribution of wealth.
CINCINNATI (AP) — A Republican U.S. senator ramped up the criticism of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, calling the fellow senator a socialist.
Two-term Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, was quoted Friday by The Daily Sentinel newspaper, which said he made the comment to a reporter Thursday while visiting the Meigs County Republican Party in southeast Ohio.
“He is left of Teddy Kennedy,” Voinovich said. “With all due respect, the man is a socialist.”
A spokesman for Voinvoich, who has also served as Ohio governor and mayor of Cleveland, said Friday the senator stands by the description.
“He believes that Barack Obama is seriously considering a redistribution of wealth, and he also has come to believe that Barack Obama has no appreciation of the 10th Amendment,” spokesman Chris Paulitz said.
That constitutional amendment states: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
Paulitz said Voinovich thinks Obama wants to take power away from the states, municipalities and people, and also “thinks people should start to focus on this.”
An Obama campaign spokesman responded that Voinovich’s comments are part of false allegations being raised now.
“John McCain and his supporters have embraced a smear campaign based on false attacks because they have no plan to turn around our economy and create jobs in Ohio,” spokesman Isaac Baker said. “Senator Obama will continue to discuss his plan to help middle-class Ohioans support their families and stay in their homes, not desperately attempt to tear down his opponent.”
In a rally Friday in West Chester, a northern Cincinnati suburb, GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin referred to Obama’s recent response to a Toledo-area plumber who challenged Obama about his tax plan. During his response, Obama told him: “I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”
“Senator Obama said he wants to spread the wealth, and he wants government to take your money and decide how to best redistribute it ... Joe [the plumber] suggested that sounded a little bit like socialism. Whatever you call it, I call it bad medicine for an ailing economy,” Palin said.

It is so true what he said.
Yeah I see as all the rich scared they will lose money in taxes too. I think they are saying these thing as scare tactics. They know Obama is leading so they want to scare people into voting for McCain, since he can not get votes the right way, with his ideas and views.
What An Obama Welfare State Would Look Like
I never really thought of what a community organizer really was until I listened to a podcast a few nights ago. The subject was that communist Saul Alinsky, who was also a community organizer like Obama. The speaker perfectly defined a community organizer as someone who hits up the local government and corporations for ever increasing benefits to welfare queens, drug addicts and criminals. So being that Obama’s main claim to fame, despite being a senator, was agitating for more handouts, it’s only natural that he would want to milk middle and upper class Americans like cows.
Obama tries to call it refundable tax credits, but it’s really just welfare. Here’s how he’ll raise taxes for his beloved welfare state.
* Obama would raise individual income taxes, increasing the top two income tax rates, with the top rate climbing by 13%, to almost 40%. This tax increase particularly hits small business, which creates the most new jobs in America.
* Obama would raise the top capital gains tax rate by 33%, to 20%.
* He would also raise the top dividends tax rate by 33%, to 20% as well.
* He would raise Social Security payroll taxes by 16% to 32% for families earning over $250,000 a year. He would consequently arbitrarily punish these families with an effective real return from Social Security of less than 0%, while making only a minor dent in the long term Social Security deficit.
* Obama would reinstate the death tax (estate tax) now being phased out under current law, with a top tax rate of 45%.
* The Obama health plan includes a new payroll tax on employers to pay for health insurance.
* Obama would impose several specified tax increases on corporations, including a new so-called windfall profits tax on oil companies.
* Obama’s protectionist trade policies would mean higher taxes and tariffs on trade.
* Obama tries to argue, crassly, that these tax increases would fall only on “the rich.” The tax increasers always start by saying that. But they always end up reaching down towards the middle class because that is where the big money is. The federal income tax was adopted almost 100 years ago with the promise it would only tax “the rich.
Obama 08!
Voinovich is your typical republican who needs to open his eyes. I hope he loses his seat in his next election. I will not vote for him. I never like him, and what has he done for us? He just doesn't want to pay higher taxes in his tax bracket. I think if you make more you should pay more. The rich should not get tax break just cause they have money. They need to look out for the middle class!
Is Obama a socialist? By Karl Lamb

Socialism, according to Karl Marx, is the transition between capitalism and communism. To achieve communism, Marx says, there must be continuing revolution in which the fundamental principal is: The end justifies the means.
For more than half a century, capitalism in the United States has taken a beating from the socialist revolution. Despite the best efforts of conservatives since the Roosevelt era, socialists have made great strides toward converting the nation to socialism. Apparently, the majority of Americans either fail to recognize the transition, or welcome it. The enthusiastic support for Barack Obama, especially among young people, is abundant evidence.
Obama has declared that he believes every person has a "right" to health care. The Socialist Party USA believes every person has a "right" to health care.
Obama believes that labor unions should be allowed to organize without a secret ballot. The Socialist Party USA calls for unions to be recognized without a secret ballot.
The Socialist Party USA recognizes the "right" of adequate housing for everyone. Obama trained ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) workers to secure mortgages for unqualified people in sufficient numbers to collapse the housing and home-financing industries.
The Socialist Party USA believes that "capitalism is fundamentally incompatible" with socialism. For years, Obama worked in Chicago through the Annenberg Challenge, along with Bill Ayers, to funnel more than $50 million to anti-capitalist education projects. In November 2006, Ayers traveled to Venezuela to speak at Hugo Chavez's Education Forum where he railed against "the failings of capitalist education," and praised the "Bolivarian Revolution and the profound reforms in education made by Hugo Chavez."
The Socialist Party USA believes in open borders and six-months residency as the only requirement for U.S. citizenship. Obama marched with illegal aliens in Chicago in support of "comprehensive" immigration reform. Listen to Obama's promises to La Raza in 2007.
The Socialist Party USA calls for an immediate withdrawal from Iraq. Obama says, "I will end this war," with never a reference to "winning" or "victory."
The Socialist Party USA calls for the "unconditional disarmament" by the United States. Obama has promised to dramatically reduce defense spending. Listen to his words here.
The Socialist Party USA calls for a "livable guaranteed annual income." Obama trained ACORN members to conduct "Living Wage" campaigns in cities around the country.
The Socialist Party USA calls for a "steeply graduated" tax policy to redistribute wealth. Obama has promised to increase the tax burden on the rich to redistribute wealth to the poor. He revealed his philosophy when answering a question from Joe the plumber, who complained that he was being taxed for his success. Obama said:
It's not that I want to punish your success. I just want to make sure that everybody who is behind you, that they've got a chance for success too. My attitude is that if the economy's good for folks from the bottom up, it's gonna be good for everybody. I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody.
This list of comparisons could be quite long. This is sufficient to reveal an unmistakable similarity between Obama's political beliefs and the beliefs of the Socialist Party USA. The tragedy is that Obama's supporters don't care. In fact, many of his supporters are delighted that he promises to usher in a new era of socialism, and push the memory of capitalism further into history.
Socialists, who are in perpetual revolution, who believe that the end justifies the means, have worked through educational institutions, non-government organizations such as ACORN and by electing socialists to public office to silence teaching the virtues of free enterprise, capitalism, private property, individual responsibility and personal achievement. For nearly two generations, students have been fed a steady diet of socialism under a variety of disguises, including Outcome Based Education, No Child Left Behind, School-to-Work and a host of other "feel good" slogans.
Students and young adults no longer know why capitalism is better than socialism. Like Obama, young people really believe that when government redistributes wealth, "it's good for everybody." They do not realize that wealth redistribution is no substitute for wealth creation. They are never taught that the only way to create wealth is for an individual to combine his energy and intellect with resources to produce a product that improves his life, or for which someone else is willing to pay.
Private property, the accumulation of personal prosperity and individual achievement are anathema to socialism. Socialism sees the individual as nothing more than a cog in a government-run machine designed to ensure equity for all.
Capitalism seeks prosperity; socialism seeks equity. Freedom increases as prosperity increases. In a socialist system, there can be neither. Part 3 of 3
Ask Voinovich about the V group and all the money his brother got through state contracts when George was Governor.
Also ask him why he voted FOR the socialistic bailout of the financial system?
I guess he and Nathan Anderson are 2 more of those who like the capitalistic system when it prospers but when it falters because of greed then socialism is the answer!
Can someone tell me why it is my responsibility to carry a higher tax burden to pay for the laxidaiscial attitude of many people today? I chose to send myself to college, and I chose to increase my earnings and earnings potential. I chose to have a family and to support that family.
Why should anyone (especially the government) tell me that it is my responsibility to give what I have busted my hump for to someone who would rather sit around and do nothing.
I give to charitable organizations, I give to schools, I pay my taxes (no refund for me there), but I do this because I chose to do it.
If you don't like your job, go get another. If you don't like the pay that you are receiving, go get a college education.
This is America, a land of capitalism where you can be anything you want to be. If life seems to be better in other places in the world, why are people not giving all they have to move there...maybe the capitalistic idealology of America is something worthwhile...
It's sad to see once-honorable public servants like John McCain and now George Voinovich reduced to red-baiting and other scare tactics in order to avoid accountability for the GOP's horrible record of governance since 2001. You don't think the GOP believes in redistributing wealth?? Of course they do. They want to redistribute wealth from the middle class to the uppermost tier of the wealthy, while all the risk spreads downwards. And who are the free market champions running the McCain campaign? Lobbyists who want to help their clients flee accountability, while feeding at the public trough. The Dallas Morning News -- which actually supports McCain! -- just ran this story about how McCain is in the pocket of big telecom and, no surprise, opposes net neutrality as a result. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedconte.... Colin Powell's endorsement confirmed what all truly honest Republicans know -- the McCain campaign is running on empty. No ideas. No integrity. No shame.
It's disappointing the Voinovich has to resort to putting down Obama with this Socialist name calling. He's better than that, at least I thought he was. I think the man is out of touch and will have a hard time winning re-election. And by the way, the Europeans have embraced some aspects of Socialism and are pretty happy with it, especially the universal health care. Their standard of living is pretty good and having been in Europe, they seem pretty happy and are perplexed that we view Socialism with such disdain.
I'm not saying that Obama isn't over to the left a bit, but you can't go any farther right than Voinovich... the fact that he still commands any respect is amazing.
Voinovich joins many others in the Republican party that won't admit their recent past "leadership" and control of all three branches of our federal government has been a total failure.
So what does he do to distract from his record of failure .....and welfare for the rich, super-rich and the many GOP connected corporations?
He embraces the tactics of Joe McCarthy by name-calling.....he has nothing else to offer. Same ole ...same ole... Fear and Smear... the GOP's twin gods.
Also as far as Voinovich and his "leadership" in the past as Governor of Ohio....what were some his hard fought for issues and legislation?
1) He got a labor law changed to benefit the "V" group Voinovich family construction company. 2) He made a big deal about fighting for a state motto ..."With God All Things Are Possible."
Did those things help most Ohioans?
Neither stemmed the tsunami of outsourced job losses across Ohio and neither created a state that is attractive to educated and creative people.
And neither did his special interests and failure agenda address all the working Ohioans that have lost their healthcare or have undoable options but have been paying for his (Voinovich's) healthcare for decades.
His record is that of failure to address the issues affecting millions of Ohioans and opportunism for himself. Voinovich is just another tool for special interests: certain rich people and certain corporations...and add to that his red meat appetizers for Ohio's Dobson crowd.
Shame on him. His record of failure has earned him a seat at Dunkin Donuts ...not another six years in the Senate.
Look up socialist in the dictionary........Obama fits the bill, we here did not create the definition, he chooses to follow it. Enough said. Win, lose or draw, it really doesn't matter who wins, nobody ever comes back to Y-Town to help out, they only need us for votes. Y-Town is like a hooker, use her, abuse her then throw away until next time. And they will.
Thank you jfuze. Its suprising how many people do not think that way any more.
Obama is a socialist and it would have been irresponsible of Voinovich to not call him what he is. THose who would claim otherwise are uneducated fools who are buying into the propeganda.
One of Obama's big things is talking about how jobs are being offshored. Do you think that heavily taxing business owners is going to entice them to stay in the US and keep their money here? If you think that you can attract jobs back to the US by taking away over half of a business owner's profits in taxes then you need to do some serious evaluation of your intelligence. Have the school systems gotten that bad at education since I graduated in 1992? Another reason to not support a school levy.
I've voted for Voinovich on a few occasions and am surprised by his stance on what he deems socialism. Could it be said that by his definition he engaged in socialism by organizing a bailout for the city of Cleveland in 1980 when he was mayor? He brokered a deal where the state backed over $30 million lent by Cleveland banks in order to bring the city out of default. Call it what you will but it was a necessary step and one that was key in starting some of the initiatives that the city continues to rely upon even today; I honestly don't see how the situation the city faced in 1980 and the situation our country faces in 2008 is all that different.
So if the situation is the same what's changed? Somewhere along the way Voinovich seems to have traded putting his constituency first for putting the advancement of his party's platform first, hopefully he won't have any problems looking his constituency in the eye as they starve.
Jeff,
I believe there is a BIG difference between "helping out" and "redistributing the wealth". I'm sure that most Americans do what they feel is necessary to "help out", but it is not my responsibility to make money to give to someone else that I choose not to.
You've totally missed my point but right on.
Has nobody ever heard the phrase "the more things change, the more they stay the same"?
Wealthy Tax Breaks? Guess what. Those businesses are the ones who pay our wages, our benefits, help provide retirement savings. Obama's redistribution of wealth policy will break this important contribution. As Obama's stock has been rising, wall street has been falling. Do you see the relationship here? Corporations, investors and businesses are fearful of his policies and are afraid to move. Our IRA's have seen losses of tens of thousands of dollars in gains from the past 8 years. If Obama is elected, many of us will see 6 figure losses in gains. This is outrageous! Millions of Americans vest their retirements in IRA's. If Obama is elected, all of us will have to extend our retirements until we are 80! Businesses will have to go thru more mergers and more lay-offs to pay for Obama's tax policies. How can this policy be good for the people if they are on unemployment and welfare? Obama's socialism program will be in full force. Be careful what you vote for. You will get much more than you bargained for. God Save us all, God Save America!
Obama 08!
Vindy, you are SOOOOOO right, who passed out blinders to Y-town? Get real people , People, for once forget the Democrat mentality, Clinton did NOTHING for us, why do you think a new regime will? Think for yourselves, consider your personal situation, look where you were and where you are now and where you are going. THINK for yourself. This is gonna get ugly.Vote with your head, not your democratic heart.
Voina-rich should have kept his comments to his self when commenting on socialism when his Cash-poor-for-25yrs-or-more-state-of-OH can't even pay their own unemployment checks. Now that their asking the federal gov't for a (bailout)-socialist-welfare-check to help pay it's unemployed citizens.
ohio and their medicaid system will be one of the first states to receive a Welfare(bailout) check in the next coming weeks because it cannot generate enough sales tax nor real estate tax (due to high foreclosure) revenue. Doesn't matter if OBAMA or BUSH or MCCAIN is in office. You'll only make a pentance on the upcoming cold whether heating oil tax. Other than that ...The state is doomed!!
Government revenues are dropping and a long war is depleting our resources. The common people will have to do with less but government never will. Who can forget Bush 41's famous quote, "Read my lips,no new taxes." He lied didn't he ? Under political pressure to keep up the spending higher taxes for all are inevitable no matter who is elected.
Hey - the site staff removed my comment. Guess they are also Hussein supporters. I said nothing that should have been removed. No swearing or anything like that. Go figure - so goes our freedom of speach.
speech, Iran said they will call BHO if he gets elected to congratulate him. Now that is not heresay - that is the truth!!!!
Well ...I guess the Voinovich cheerleaders on this thread are proud that George is endorsing McCain. Are you also proud of his twice past endorsements of George W Bush for President ? That's called bad judgement.
And speaking of endorsements as reported recently....Al Qaeda, like Voinovich, have also endorsed John McCain.
Quite the contrary, Kids, AlQaeda as well as the Castro brothers have endorsed Obama. Not to mention a few other unsavory elements. Something the democrats should be proud of.
