Youngstown has four new firefighters

Published: Fri, October 10, 2008 @ 12:30 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — Fire Chief John O’Neill isn’t wasting any time getting the new firefighters at Youngstown Station No. 1 started.

The four firefighters who were sworn in this morning will board the trucks quickly, said O’Neill — some as early as 8 a.m. Saturday.

The four new appointed Youngstown firefighters are: Benjamin Cintron III, 20, of Campbell; Mark DiFrangia, 31, of Austintown; Jared Rupert, 24, of Boardman; and Craig Heinz, 30, of Austintown.

Mayor Jay Williams appointed the firefighters and also promoted Ben Szmara to the position of Lieutenant.

Szmara of Cornersburg has been with the YFD since February 2000.

Swearing in new firefighters who are willing to serve their community is something not to take for granted, said Williams.

“They [firefighters] come and put their lives on the line at any given point,” said Williams and for that he expressed his appreciation to the new inductees and their families.

They can have a front-row seat to all the vacant homes burning down nightly by arsonists without FD intervention. Rookies bring wienies and marshmallows.
