Terrorist bombing casualties to be remembered in service Sunday

STRUTHERS — A service marking the 25th anniversary of the terrorist bombing of the Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, on Oct. 23, 1983, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Beirut Memorial by the Tri-State Detachment of the Marine Corps League.

There were 241 servicemen killed in the attack, 220 of whom were

Marines. Fourteen of the men were from Ohio and three were local residents: Marine Lance Corporals Edward Johnston of Struthers and Stanley Sliwinski of Niles, and Sgt. James McDonough of New Castle, Pa. The bombing took place on Oct. 23, 1983.

The memorial is located beside Lake Hamilton on state Route 616 (Poland Avenue) between Hamilton Boulevard and Fifth Street. It can be reached from Youngstown by following state Route 680 south; U.S. Route 224 east to Poland, then following Route 616 north toward Struthers. From downtown Struthers, take Route 616 south.
