Complaints filed in American Standard strike

SALEM — Both workers and strikers at American Standard have filed complaints with law enforcement officials about the other side’s conduct.

At least six workers who have crossed the picket line have filed reports.

Salem and Perry Township police received four reports between late Friday and Sunday morning of nails being thrown in driveways. No damage was reported.

The Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office also reported that a Salem Township resident complained Saturday about nails in the driveway.

On Friday, a Fairfield Township resident reported that a rock had been thrown through a car window. The amount of the damage was not known.

Richard Hands, the local president, complained to police that the workers who had crossed the picket line had threatened retaliation for the damage.

Hands and Joe Holcomb, a staff representative for the steel workers, could not be reached.

About 19 of 340 union members crossed the picket line.

Tracy Benson Kirker, a spokesperson for the company, issued a statement, saying, “While we disagree with their decision, management honors Local 1538’s right to strike. As you know, some union members have returned to work under the terms and conditions of the company’s last, best and final contract offer. We respect and commend these individuals, all of whom have made a difficult and deeply personal decision.

“A few of these individuals have experienced hostility in the form of personal property damage. We understand that emotions are running high as the strike progresses in its fifth week. We would [advise] individuals on both sides to respect each other’s choices.”

No contract talks are scheduled.
