4 students will receive Marvel Flint scholarships

CANFIELD — The first Marvel E. Flint Scholar Awards Dinner will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday at Avion on the Water Banquet Center, 2177 Western Reserve Road.

A fund has been established to honor the outstanding accomplishments of students in the Valley and provide scholarships to disadvantaged youths.

The late Marvel E. Flint was born and educated in Youngstown where she attended church. She lived in Hermitage, Pa., with her husband, Paul G. Flint, until her death in January. Mrs. Flint encouraged the academic success of young people throughout the Mahoning and Shenango valleys.

Mrs. Flint’s husband, his family and Dr. Morris W. Lee, pastor of Third Baptist Church, have established the scholarship fund in her name.

This year the Flint Scholarship Fund will honor the accomplishments of four of Youngstown’s best and brightest students. Cherise Benton, Kristi Mraz, Misti Mraz and Taquaesa Toney are seniors at Youngstown Early College, a high school operated by Youngstown City Schools and located on the campus of Youngstown State University. Each of these students will graduate in May at age 18 with both a high school diploma with honors and an associate degree from YSU.

Tickets for the dinner are $100 per person, and all proceeds will go to the Flint Scholarship Fund. Half of the ticket price is tax deductible. To buy tickets, call the office of Third Baptist Church at (330) 743-0640 or Paul Flint at (724) 981-6744.
