NEW CASTLE, Pa. — A motorcyclist was killed on U.S. Route 422 near the state Route 168 overpass, Pennsylvania State Police in New Castle reported. Raymond E. Spangler, 65, 3613 Hubbard Road, West Middlesex, Pa., died at the scene at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Spangler was traveling west on Route 422 in the slow lane when he crossed the passing lane into the median, striking a guide rail as he did so, police said. He was thrown from the motorcycle and landed along the southern berm of highway more than 82 feet away, police said. The motorcycle traveled 172 feet and came to rest on the opposite side of the highway, police said.

Police said numerous motorists stopped to try to help Spangler, but could not. He was not wearing a helmet, police said.
