Retirees, veterans can still claim rebate

Published: Fri, June 20, 2008 @ 12:00 a.m.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Internal Revenue Service says thousands of Ohio retirees and disabled veterans are missing out on a tax rebate because they haven’t filed a return.

The IRS is trying to reach out to people who don’t normally file because their government benefits are not taxable. They’re still eligible for a $300 stimulus check, but need to submit a return to get one.

Spokesman Eric Erickson says the tax agency hasn’t heard from 27 percent of retirees and disabled veterans in Ohio who could receive a rebate. That’s close to 227,000 residents.

Those people will receive letters from the IRS this summer with a tax form they can fill out to claim their payment.
