Bond denied during appeals process

YOUNGSTOWN — Dr. Gregory S. Dew, the former Boardman chiropractor sentenced in March to 43 years in prison for committing multiple sex crimes dating back to 1990, will not be getting out of prison while he appeals his conviction.

The 7th District Court of Appeals, in a decision released Wednesday, denied Dew’s request that the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court set bond and suspend his sentence during the appeal.

Appeals court Judges Gene Donofrio, Cheryl White and Mary DeGenaro signed the ruling, which backs the decision of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge R. Scott Krichbaum.

After his conviction, Dew first sought bail from Judge Krichbaum, who denied it. Dew appealed that decision to the state appeals court on the grounds that he had no prior criminal record and that he enjoyed a sterling reputation in the community before the conviction.

The Mahoning County Prosecutor’s office opposed bond, noting the seriousness of the offenses and the absence of a constitutional right to bond pending appeal.

Dew was convicted of sex crimes committed between 1990 and 1992 against two of his female gymnastics students, who were then between ages 15 and 17, before he became a chiropractor.

He also was convicted of sex crimes against two adult female patients in his chiropractic practice between 2005 and 2007.

Dew, 46, of Columbiana, is housed in the Madison Correctional Institution.
