NOTES FROM EASTWOOD

Published: Wed, June 18, 2008 @ 12:00 a.m.

Opening night: Tuesday night marked the opening of the 60th season for the New York-Penn League. The Scrappers have been members for 10 years.

Start at home: This is only the third time in 10 years that the Scrappers have opened the season at home. In nine seasons, Mahoning Valley has recorded 319 victories and has a .519 winning percentage (349-324). The Scrappers have had only two losing records in franchise history (2001 and 2005). They have been to the playoffs three times, but not since the 2004 season when they won the NYPL championship.

Lucky seven: Scrappers first-year manager Travis Fryman becomes the seventh different manager in franchise history. Ted Kubiak, the team’s first manager, ran the team on two different occasions, the first two years (1999 and 2000 and then again in 2003). Rouglas Odor was the only other manager to work more than one season as he directed the team in 2005 and 2006. Dave Turgeon (2001), Chris Bando (2002), Mike Sarbaugh (2004) and Tim Laker (2007) were the others.

Game on TV: Television station Fox 17/62 (WYFX) carried the game live with Chad Krispinsky doing the play-by-play and Youngstown State head baseball coach Rich Pasquale handling the color comments. Pasquale’s assistant coach Craig Antush is the Scrappers official scorekeeper for all home games.
