Lordstown schools ready for new students from GM’s shift expansion

Published: Tue, June 17, 2008 @ 11:45 a.m.

LORDSTOWN — The superintendent of the Lordstown schools said his district could easily assimilate 100 new children, if the increase is spread over 12 grades.

William Phaler said the announcement that the GM plant here is about to hire 1,400 people is a “win-win situation” for the area.

An influx of workers coming from other GM plants around the country could help the local housing market recuperate a bit, he said, adding that the Lordstown schools, rated as effective by the state, would welcome new pupils coming to the area with their families.

The district is moving into a newly renovated elementary school this fall, so there will be plenty of room, Phaler said.

He really doesn’t anticipate enrolling 100 additional children, but getting 10 or 20 new pupils to add to the 570 currently enrolled “would be nice bump,” he said.
