VETERANS

Flights to WWII memorial

Applications are being accepted for Honor Flight, a nonprofit national organization, which flies World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., to view the World War II Memorial.

The one-day flight and tour of Washington, D.C., and food and beverages are provided free. Veterans who must use wheelchairs are accepted. Contact Honor Flight at www.honorflight.org or call (937) 521-2400. The local organizer, Chris Litton, can be reached at (330) 744-2131, ext. 11.

Veterans council meeting

STRUTHERS — The United Veterans Council of Greater Youngstown will meet at VFW Post 3538, 157 Lowellville Road, at 7 p.m. Monday.

Scholarship program

The Ohio War Orphans Scholarship Program awards tuition assistance to the children of deceased veterans or veterans receiving 60 percent or greater service-connected Veterans Affairs disability compensation, and who served in the armed forces during a period of declared war or conflict.

Combat duties are not required. To be eligible, students must be enrolled for full-time undergraduate study at an eligible Ohio college or university, and must be an Ohio resident under age 25. The application deadline is July 1. For more information, call the Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission at (330) 740-2450.

ADVANCED TRAINING

Patient administration

Navy Lt. Andrew D. McLaughlin, son of Janine A. and Dale R. McLaughlin of Salem, graduated from the four-week Patient Administration Course at Naval School of Health Sciences, Bethesda, Md.

McLaughlin is a 2000 graduate of South Range High School, North Lima, and a 2004 graduate of Grove City College, Grove City, Pa.

BASIC TRAINING

Air Force: Reserve Airman Scott F. Clokey (honor graduate, high school not listed), son of Betsy and James Clokey of Grove City, Pa.

Army: National Guard Pvt. Gina M. Burns (Poland Seminary High School, ’07), daughter of Libby Burns of Poland.

Navy: Seaman Apprentice Jason P. Davis (Austintown Fitch High School, ’05), son of Richard W. Davis of Mineral Ridge.
