Burkey named assistant trainer
YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State has named Todd Burkey assistant athletic trainer.
Burkey has been strength and conditioning coach at YSU for eight years.
Also, Jeff Wills, a 1989 graduate of YSU, has been named assistant athletic trainer, and John Patrick has been named to replace Burkey as strength and conditioning coach.
Volleyball adds assistant coach
YOUNGSTOWN — Darcy Thompson has been named assistant volleyball coach at Youngstown State.
Thompson was at Villanova University in 2007 and was a volunteer assistant at Dayton in 2006.
She played at Robert Morris University, graduating in 2005.
Penn-Ohio team adds sponsor
CANFIELD — Inner Circle Pizza and Hampton Inn Suites have joined the Penn-Ohio Tigers minor-league football team for a raffle.
At each home game at Canfield High School, the Tigers will raffle off a two-night weekend stay at the Hampton Inn Suites, 6690 Ironwood Blvd., Canfield, and a large pizza each month for six months.
The Tigers’ home opener is June 28 at 7 p.m. at Canfield High Stadium.
Fitch HOF selections near
AUSTINTOWN — Austintown Fitch High School Athletic Hall of Fame selection committee will meet tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the high school.
Between now at July the committee will determine which candidates will be part of the inaugural induction class that will be honored on Oct. 10 in Falcon Stadium at halftime of the Fitch-Massillon Perry football game.
The first-ever Falcons Athletic Hall of Fame awards banquet will be held Oct. 11 at Immaculate Heart of Mary’s Parish Center.
Grove City netter honored
GROVE CITY, Pa. — Grove City College junior men’s tennis player Jeremy Dwyer was named College Division At-Large Third Team academic All-America honors from ESPN The Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). It is Dwyer’s first Academic All-America honor.
Bethany coach named AD
BETHANY, W.Va. — Tim Weaver, head football coach at Bethany College, has taken on additional responsibility as Director of Athletics and Recreation, according to Dr. Scott D. Miller, president of the college.
Smoltz future still uncertain
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz had surgery Tuesday to repair the labrum in his right shoulder and his hopes for a comeback in 2009 remain uncertain.
Dr. James Andrews and an associate performed the arthroscopic procedure. Smoltz said last week he expected to get a definitive word on his comeback hopes from the operation, but no such announcement followed the procedure.
“The prognosis on John’s shoulder is unclear based on the findings of today’s surgery,” said Braves general manager Frank Wren. Tigers demote Dontrelle Willis
DETROIT — The Tigers sent struggling Dontrelle Willis down to Class A on Tuesday, hoping the former star lefty can find his control.
Detroit optioned Willis to Lakeland of the Florida State League — and home to the Tigers’ spring training camp — a day after he matched a career high by giving eight earned runs on five walks and three hits in 1 1-3 innings against Cleveland.
Willis (0-1) has walked 21 batters in 11 1-3 innings. The 8-2 loss to the Indians came in his second start since going on the disabled list with a hyperextended right knee.
