Airlines decide to roll back weekend fare increases
NEW YORK — A number of major airlines rolled back a weekend fare increase Monday, the first time in more than half a dozen attempts that a widespread price increase failed to take hold across the struggling industry.
Carriers declined to say whether the shift signaled concerns about falling customer demand. Still, the decision served as a reminder that passengers — many reeling from financial worries of their own — may be nearing a tipping point in terms of how much they will pay to fly.
Car-hauler employees stage walkout at 24 sites
DETROIT — About 1,250 Teamsters-represented employees of car hauler Performance Transportation Services Inc. walked off their jobs Monday — driving automakers to find other carriers to move vehicles from plants to dealer showrooms.
The walkout at 24 plant sites, ports and rail heads in 15 states began at 9 a.m. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters says it’s protesting an emergency 15 percent pay cut granted by a bankruptcy court judge and unfair labor practices.
Automakers said they have developed contingency plans for delivering cars.
