After a record high, temperatures moderate

YOUNGSTOWN — If Monday seemed like the hottest day in recent history, it was.

The previous record high for June 9 was set at 90 degrees in 1964. Monday’s temperature peaked at 91.

High temperatures are usually significantly lower than that in June, averaging 77.1 degrees.

Today’s high may offer slight relief and is expected in the lower 80s, according to the National Weather Service. The forecast calls for a 70 percent chance of rain early today, which will dissipate into clear skies by noon, as a cold front makes its way through the region.

High temperatures will remain in the lower 80s midweek before settling in the mid-80s by Saturday.

Innocent plea entered

AUSTINTOWN— The driver of the truck that backed over and killed a blind Austintown man last week has filed an innocent plea to a charge of vehicular manslaughter.

Clement Davis, 63, of Warren, had been scheduled for arraignment at the Mahoning County Area Court here Monday afternoon for the misdemeanor charge, but that was canceled due to the plea.

Davis’ pre-trial hearing is set for 2:30 p.m. June 16 at the Mahoning County Area Court.

Anthony Latosky, 29, of Austintown was killed May 30 when Davis accidentally hit him with his garbage truck as he backed out of a private driveway. When the accident occurred, Latosky was walking north on the east side of Raccoon Road.

Athletic complex bids

CANFIELD — Township trustees are advertising for bids for the work needed to turn a field on Herbert Road next to Old North Church into an athletic complex.

Trustees will open the bids at a special meeting at 7 p.m. June 24.

The township bought the 58 acres about a mile west of state Route 46 in 2006. Work needed includes dirt moving and preparation of the land for athletic facilities, as well as building a pond and parking areas.

Reese said he hopes the park will provide a place for the Canfield Soccer Club to play its games, as well as provide recreation and sports facilities for other activities such as ice hockey.

Menacing, assault

LIBERTY — A township man is due in Girard Municipal Court today on misdemeanor menacing and assault charges after a physical altercation with a manager at West Fork Roadhouse on Belmont.

John Venable, 42, of Breeze Knoll Drive, was taken into custody Saturday evening at the restaurant. He was later released on his own recognizance.

According to police reports, Venable went to the restaurant to discuss his daughter’s paycheck with 38-year-old manager Scott Husk. A physical altercation between the two men followed. Venable and Husk had to be separated by several employees and patrons at the restaurant.
