COLUMBUS (AP) — Kyle Reese tossed a one-hitter and had two hits and drove in two runs to lead Hamler Patrick Henry to a 10-0 victory over Berlin Hiland in Saturday’s Division IV state championship game at Cooper Stadium.
Reese struck out five, didn’t walk a batter and hit one in the five-inning game, shortened by the 10-run mercy rule.
The Patriots (28-3), the No. 1 team in the final state coaches association poll, picked up two runs in the first on a walk, Reese’s single and a single by Chris Boyer.
They added two more in the third on a walk, a single, a stolen base and two ground outs to the right side of the infield.
Patrick Henry won its first title in its second trip to the state tournament.
Brandon Wengerd picked up the only hit for Hiland (28-4), a single in the fourth.
The Hawks had their first two runners on that inning but Reese retired the next three batters on two grounders he fielded and a fly out.
The Hawks had lost in the 2000 title game in their only previous state appearance.
