STAFF REPORT
SALEM — Roger H. Luscombe will present “The History of Radio Station WSOM” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Salem Historical Society, 208 S. Broadway Ave.
Known professionally as “Jolly Roger,” Luscombe used to give early morning broadcasts from studios in downtown Salem.
He has been in the media business in one form or another since 1959 when he started at WSOM-FM one month after the station went on the air. He served as announcer as well as program director.
His morning drive-time program included music ranging from Top 40 to country.
He also produced and hosted “Big Band Sunday,” which aired for five years in the mid-1980s. While in Salem, he co-owned a restaurant, Bushwack’s, in the ’90s, and also served on Salem City Council for one year.
Currently, Luscombe is still fulfilling his role as on-air personality “Jolly Roger” from 1 to 5 p.m. daily on WSOM, Salem-Youngstown.
