Austintown native Dan Birmingham trains Winky Wright. He provided his observations on the Pavlik-Lockett fight on Vindy.com. Here’s what he saw:
First Round — Jack Loew proudly marches Kelly Pavlik to the ring and as Lockett enters the ring with a mean scowl on his face. The bell rings for round one and Pavlik starts to work hi jab in the first minute. His jab is landing and he is finding Lockett with both hands. He hurts the challenger with right hands and hooks. Lockett hasn’t landed a meaningful punch. Big round for the champ.
Second round — Pavlik comes out and starts his working his long jab and then hurts Lockett with a right hand. Kelly is applying constant pressure, mixing his atack well and knocks Lockett down with a hard body shot to the liver. Lockett beats the count and the Champ goes back to work, breaking his opponent down, working the body and head well and catches Lockett again and again down he goes. He beats the count once more and the bell rings, saving Lockett. Another huge roung for the loyal Youngstowner.
Third Round — The champ continues where he left off with an awesome offensive attack and Lockett appears to be hurt again and the towel is thrown in to save Lockett from a worse beating; smart move Enzo Calzaghe. Great fight for the champion. He showed a lot of poise in this fight. He was relaxed and mixed his attack beautifully. He showed good solid defense tonite and picked his shots and combinations like a seasoned champion. Jack Loew has done a superb job with Kelly, along with the whole team; Cameron Dunkin, Bob Arum and can’t forget Mr and Mrs Pavlik. The Youngstown fans are second to none. Of course being Winky Wright’s trainer, I must say we’d welcome a fight with the Champ.
