NORTH JACKSON — The Night Hawks and East Ohio Big Wings are taking to the skies on Father’s Day weekend for a remote-control airplane show.
The two-day event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and runs through next Sunday at the former Youngstown Executive Airport on Gibson Road in North Jackson. Free pilot registration is at 8 a.m. Saturday.
Pilots can fly models all day, with International Miniature Aircraft Association Class C rules applying until 5 p.m. The models flying from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. will have wing spans of about 7 feet.
Steve Gerish, president of the Night Hawks, which is a local chapter of the Academy of Model Aeronautics, said this is the only event of its kind in the area, and the public is invited.
Several special guests will be Lewis Patton and Lee Gregory.
Patton, from Louisville, Ky., will fly the F18 Hornet, which is the largest-scale aircraft allowed to fly in the United States. Gregory builds planes for the movie industry out of his business in Ashtabula and will be flying a model he just sold for $25,000.
Food and drinks will be supplied by local church groups, and nonfood vendors and campers are admitted for free.
“It’s going to be donation only, at the gates,” Gerish said.
