MLB ROUNDUP Saturday’s other games

Published: Sun, June 8, 2008 @ 12:00 a.m.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Yankees 12, Royals 11

NEW YORK — Johnny Damon went 6-for-6 with a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning, rallying New York over Kansas City. New York overcame a pair of four-run deficits and a huge game by Kansas City’s Jose Guillen, who hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the seventh and matched a franchise record with seven RBIs.

Red Sox 11, Mariners 3

BOSTON — Manny Ramirez hit his 504th career homer and Tim Wakefield baffled most of Seattle’s hitters for seven innings. Boston rebounded from Friday’s 8-0 loss to Seattle for its seventh victory in nine games; and 16th of 18 at Fenway Park. Ramirez tied Eddie Murray for 23rd on the career list with a two-run drive over the Green Monster seats. J.D. Drew homered, tripled and singled.

Orioles 9, Blue Jays 5

TORONTO — Jay Payton had five RBIs, Jeremy Guthrie tossed seven strong innings as Baltimore won its third straight. Guthrie (3-6) allowed one run and six hits to win for the first time since May 13 against Boston. He struck out six and walked none.

White Sox 11, Twins 2

CHICAGO — Joe Crede hit two homers for the second straight game and had six RBIs to lead Chicago over Minnesota. Crede, who underwent back surgery last June and only played 47 games a year ago, has five homers in his last three games.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Dodgers 7, Cubs 3

LOS ANGELES — Matt Kemp capped a five-run seventh inning with a three-run homer, Russell Martin also went deep as Los Angeles beat Carlos Zambrano. Martin finished with three RBIs as the Dodgers sent Zambrano to his first loss in 11 starts. Derek Lowe (4-5) allowed three runs and six hits through seven innings, striking out four and walking two. Lowe pitched no-hit ball through the first four innings in a rematch of his head-to-head duel with Zambrano on May 28 at Wrigley Field, when the right-hander pitched seven scoreless innings and Zambrano held the Dodgers to one run over eight. Neither got a decision in the Cubs’ 2-1 victory.

Giants 6, Nationals 0

WASHINGTON — John Bowker’s grand slam capped a six-run eighth inning and Jonathan Sanchez won his third straight start. Sanchez (5-3) allowed four singles, walked two and struck out four in seven innings. Rich Aurilia finished with three hits for San Francisco, relied on a big inning for the second straight night to again subdue the Nationals.

Rockies 7, Brewers 2

DENVER — Brad Hawpe hit a grand slam, Ian Stewart launched a solo homer into the third deck and Greg Reynolds got his first major league win. Reynolds (1-3) baffled hitters all evening, limiting Milwaukee to two runs and four hits over six innings. Reynolds, the second overall pick in the 2006 draft, had his sinker working, breaking four Brewer bats as he picked up his first win in six starts. Colorado has won four in a row, matching the team’s longest streak of the season.

Phillies 6, Braves 2

ATLANTA — Chase Utley’s eighth-inning triple drove in Shane Victorino with the go-ahead run and Philadelphia hit three home runs to beat Atlanta. Kyle Kendrick and four relievers held the Braves to only five hits, including Chipper Jones’ two-run homer in the sixth that tied the score 2-2.
