YOUNGSTOWN — A highlight of the May 7 meeting of the Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown was the presentation of the organization’s 2008 scholarship to Alyson Pierce, an honors student at Howland High School.
Lynn Hoffmann, chairman of the club’s scholarship committee, made the presentation to Pierce, who will study forestry at Michigan State University in East Lansing and will pursue a career in horticulture with an emphasis on forest management and wildlife science.
Pierce has compiled an impressive list of extracurricular activities, including four years in Trumbull County 4-H Veterinary Science Club, for which she held several offices. An accomplished musician specializing in French horn, she was first chair with the school’s Symphonic Band and also with Stambaugh Youth Concert Band.
During the summer of 2007, Pierce participated in the T4 STEM Academy at Youngstown State University, a specialized program designed to prepare high school students for careers as teachers in science, technology, engineering and math.
She is a daughter of Michael and Paula Pierce of Howland.
The MGCY, one of the oldest men's garden clubs in the United States, has presented a scholarship annually since 1991.
