Grant of $89,000 to gain mammograms for many

The American Cancer Society has received $89,000 from the Northeast Ohio Affiliate Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization to pay for mammograms. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States, and the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer. The grant will provide mammograms for 950 women in Carroll, Columbiana, Mahoning, Trumbull and Tuscarawas counties.

The American Cancer Society’s BEST (Breast Education Screening Together) program is one source that pays for the cost of a screening and diagnostic mammogram. BEST helps women who can’t afford a mammogram or who need assistance for a variety of reasons, said Al Stabilito, Northeast Ohio public relations director of the ACS.

For more information about the BEST program, mammograms or breast cancer, call the American Cancer Society toll free at (888) 227-6446, option 2.

Early babies face problems, studies show

COLUMBUS — Studies are showing that a delivery of a baby even two weeks early can be associated with newborn complications, according to Dr. Celeste Durnwald, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at The Ohio State University Medical Center.

“Some early births are scheduled for good reason, in response to health concerns for baby or mother. However, there is still ongoing development and maturation of the fetus, even in those last few weeks,” Dr. Durnwald said. The consequences of being born early can include problems such as jaundice, poor feeding, inability to sit in a car seat without breathing difficulties and, rarely, premature lungs. These situations are usually not life-threatening, but can lead to increased hospital stays, admission to the neonatal intensive care unit, and days of anxiety for the new parents, she said.
