Meeting earlier this week, school officials handled these matters:

Discussed a five-year, 5.5-mill renewal levy on the Aug. 5 special election ballot. The measure should bring to the district about $988,485 annually for operating expenses, Treasurer John Zinger noted, stressing that the levy will not mean new taxes for residents. The district will continue to function under existing revenue, he added.

Approved an option easement agreement between the district and the Reuben McMillan Free Library Association regarding a new branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. The facility, estimated to open in late 2009, will be built between the elementary school and the new Jackson-Milton High School/Middle School on Mahoning Avenue. The agreement provides the district easements for the library system to build the facility, as well as first priority to buy the building at fair market value in the event the library closes, Zinger explained. The school will house pupils in grades six through 12 and is to open in September 2009.

Gave a two-year contract, effective Aug. 1, to David Vega as new high school principal. Vega will make $70,000 a year and replace Joe Malmisur, who took a position in a Portage County school district.

Accepted a $2,000 donation from the James family to set up the Ron James Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund. The money will be used to provide scholarships at the end of the 2008-09 school year to deserving students, Zinger said.
