Sweep nets 101 fugitives in Youngstown area

Published: Wed, July 16, 2008 @ 10:53 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — Local, state and federal law enforcement officers nabbed 101 fugitives from justice in the greater Youngstown area during a one-week period at the end of June.

The combined effort, targeting crimes of violence, sex offenders, gang activity and narcotics violations, was coordinated under the U.S. Marshal’s Operation FALCON, a nationwide crackdown on fugitives.

FALCON stands for Federal And Local Cops Organized Nationally and the drive ran from June 23 through June 30.

There were nearly 750 fugitives arrested in the 40 counties located within the U.S. Marshals Service for the Northern District of Ohio during the crackdown, said Peter J. Elliott, U.S. Marshal for the district, as he announced the results today.

Area police chiefs who joined Elliott for the announcement said the program has been a remarkable success in getting dangerous criminals off the street.
