Ohio Amateur tournament returns to Findlay

Published: Tue, July 15, 2008 @ 12:02 a.m.

FINDLAY (AP) — With Arnold Palmer, John Cook and Ben Curtis among its past champions, the 102nd Ohio Amateur men’s golf championship is returning to Findlay Country Club for the first time since 1973.

The tournament, which gets under way today, is also celebrating its centennial. Measuring 6,684 yards, FCC will be one of the shortest venues to host an Ohio Am in recent years.

But it’s an old-style, tree-lined course with tight fairways that should more than make up for what it lacks in length.

Six former champions are in the field of 147 players. They include two-time winner Robert Gerwin III (1996, 2001), along with Steve Anderson (1990), Alan Fadel (1995), Andy Montooth (1997), Kevin Kornowa (2002) and Steve Paramore (2003).

The four rounds of medal play run through Friday, with cuts after the second and third rounds.

The field includes 13-year-old Alec Tahy of Dayton, the youngest qualifier in at least 25 years, according to tournament officials.
