Notebook - Scrappers vs. Hudson Valley

Published: Tue, July 15, 2008 @ 12:01 a.m.

This and that: The Scrappers scored a season-high 13 runs during Sunday’s win over Hudson Valley — and needed just seven innings to do it. After getting shut out in the first game of the doubleheader, 3-0, Mahoning Valley’s exploded in the nightcap. ... Jeremie Tice, who went 3-for-4 in that game, is seventh in the New York-Penn League with a .343 batting average while teammate Brock Simpson is 10th in the league with a .338 average. Tice also leads the league in on-base percentage (.465). ... Ryan Blair has caught fire during the homestand, hitting .529 (9 of 17) with a homer, four RBIs, four runs and a stolen base. ... Mahoning Valley was seventh in team batting in the 14-team NYPL with a .247 average and ninth in pitching with a 3.90 ERA.

Around the league: Batavia and Williamsport have each won three straight games while Tri-City has lost four straight. ... Jamestown entered Monday’s action with the league’s best record (17-7), due in large part to a 9-2 home record. State College (6-19) was last in the league and was 3-10 at home. Only Tri-City was worse with a 3-11 record.

Like free stuff? If you’re planning to attend a Scrappers game during the second half of the season, mark these two games on your calendar: Manager Travis Fryman’s bobblehead giveaway night will be Aug. 9 and middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik will have his bobblehead night on Aug. 16. Both giveaways are for the first 1,000 fans only, so get your tickets first, then get your lawn chair ready.

Log on to the Scrappers’ Web site, www.mvscrappers.com, and vote for one of six finalists, which were chosen from more than 100 entries submitted worldwide. While you’re there, make sure you vote for the Scrappers’ 10th anniversary team.
