Boardman man gets 18 months in case of attempted robbery

STAFF REPORT

YOUNGSTOWN — A 26-year-old man has been sent to prison for 18 months for snatching cash from the register at the Get Go gasoline station on U.S. Route 224 in Boardman on Jan. 6 after buying a pack of gum there.

Shane C. Champney, of Ardendale Lane, Boardman, drew the sentence Wednesday from Judge Timothy E. Franken of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court after pleading guilty to a reduced charge of attempted robbery. Champney initially had been charged with robbery.

As he ran away, Champney was tackled in the Get Go parking lot by an employee and held on the ground for police by the employee and a customer.

At the time, Champney was on parole after serving a prison sentence for a 2004 aggravated robbery, said Kasey C. Shidel, assistant county prosecutor.

Champney apologized for the January crime and told the judge he committed that offense while suffering the effects of alcohol and drug abuse.

Champney will get credit for the six months he’s already been jailed, but the Ohio Adult Parole Authority may add to his prison time because he violated parole by being arrested for the new crime, Judge Franken said.
