DOUG MORGAN’S BARN Torn down, moved, reassembled

Published: Tue, July 8, 2008 @ 12:00 a.m.

Doug Morgan rebuilt a 19-century barn near Mount Vernon. It was taken down last year in Union County.

Size: 30 feet by 45 feet.

Frame: 12-by-12 and 10-by-10 chestnut and white oak timbers.

Construction: Mortise and tenon joints with wood held together by 8-inch locust and oak pegs.

Support: The largest beams are 40 feet long.

Style: Banked barn. Either it was built into the side of a hill or embankment or a bank was built up to the second floor to give easy access to all levels.

Roof: Standing-seam metal.

Siding: Morgan used modern, fiber cement siding when he reassembled the barn but reused the original siding inside as wall covering.
