AFSCME concerned about losing Youngstown school district jobs

Published: Tue, July 8, 2008 @ 9:29 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — District employees concerned about changes in their jobs and possible cuts in other positions attended a school board meeting this week intent on showing board members how they feel.

The school board’s business committee, in charge of preparing a special education transportation contract for the entire board to review, meets at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, but members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees were not waiting for that meeting.

AFSCME members have been concerned that possible changes in transportation and food services in the contract could affect their jobs. Dozens of AFSCME members filled the board’s meeting chambers tonight wearing green shirts with the union logo stenciled on the front.

Several people spoke to the board on behalf of the employees.

Bill Padisak, president of the Mahoning and Trumbull AFL-CIO, said many believe the board is planning to outsource some management positions under the new contract. He said such a move will ultimately mean the outsourcing of busing altogether — something he feels will cost the district more money.

One thing which ought to be obvious to everyone is that changes are needed to the way Youngstown's schools are managed . If labor unions had the answers to the schools' problems , they have had plenty of time already to provide them . Why should it matter where managers live , so long as the students benefit & the managers are accountable ?

I live outside Youngstown , but I help pay for Youngstown's schools through my property taxes , so please excuse my opinion . The repuation of Youngstowns schools makes it harder for me to find tenants than it ought to be . When I look on the internet , I find some good performance mentioned. However, overall performance is not good & yet the cost per student is higher than elsewhere in Ohio . Why should that be ? Social Studies & Science grades of students are especially disappointing , yet the Mayor & the Chamber of Commerce are on record as saying these subjects are of particular importance to the future of the Mahoning Valley.

I believe that at its basis a great school system is founded on great teachers motivating students ; & buildings , buses & lunches are secondary matters . I hope I haven't offended any great teachers who work for Youngstown schools
