Young people sign on as poll workers

Published: Sat, February 23, 2008 @ 7:18 p.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — Steven Bensinger, 18, is part of an excited new generation of poll workers.

The South Range senior received his poll worker training Saturday at the Mahoning County Board of Elections.

He’s never cast a vote in an election before. But he knows which box he will check on March 4.

“I want to vote for Obama,” he said. “I did a report about him a long time ago and I’ve always been interested in him ever since.”

Young people like Bensinger have come forward in force since the board of elections sounded the call for 17- and 18-year-old poll workers this election. About 600 high schoolers responded — more than twice the availability, said Joyce Kale-Pesta, the board’s deputy director.

The county has never solicited assistance from school-age individuals before.

The truth is, the NAFTA Agreement was signed by Bill Clinton on Sept. 14 1993.

Sen. Clinton has always touted her 35years of experience and this includes her years in the White House. This is Hillary Clinton’s voting record on the NAFTA issue.

1) She voted yes to free trade agreement with Oman, Ref. United States - Oman Free Trade Agreement: Bill S.3569: Vote number 2006-190 on June 29, 2006.

2) She voted yes on establishing Free Trade Agreement between US and Singapore. Ref.: US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement Implementation Act. Bill S.1417/HR 2739: Vote number 2003-318 on Jul. 31 2003.

3) She voted yes on establishing Free Trade between the US and Chile. Ref. US-Chile Free Trade Agreement Implementation. Act. Bill S. 1416/HR 2738. Vote number 2003-319 on July 31 2003.

4) Voted yes on granting normal trade relations status to Vietnam. Ref: Bill HJRES51: Vote number 2001-291 on October 3, 2001.

5)She also voted for open trade with China, despite China's substantial human rights violations and evidence to show that NAFTA has caused the loss of millions of US jobs to non-industrial countries and hasn't delivered on the promise of widespread prosperity.

Sen. Clinton speaks about NAFTA saying that she never supported it from day one. The truth is in her voting record, she not only voted for it but she also didn't actively push for modification to the US free trade agreement until she campaigned in Ohio recently. Don't believe what anyone says, just look it up, use the internet to see her voting record on NAFTA. Hillary, you think Americans cannot search for your voting records, "Sen. Hillary Clinton Shame on you" because people in Ohio aren't stupid. Many people I know are unemployed because of this trade agreement. Please people in Ohio don't believe anyone just look up the facts. As far as I'm concerned Hillary just lost my vote.

Unfortunately it's essential to follow-up on any Clinton speech with a hefty dose of truth serum. In the latest debate, Hillary regurgitated her familiar mantra that she would veto the falsely maligned Bush taxcuts which resuscitated the U.S. economy from the inherited Clinton recession; but, which Hillary says favor only the rich. That tired old populist ploy of "soak the rich". However , a brief review of IRS statistics related to post-Bush tax cut revenues reveals exactly the opposite. Specifically, the share of individual income taxes paid by the bottom 40% of American taxpayers, as a result of expanded child tax credits and earner income tax credits, was reduced from 0% to a -4%; and, took another ten million low income Americans completely off of the tax roles. That is, a very significant four(4) % decrease. On the other end of the scale, the tax burden on the top 20% of income earners, the so-called rich, increased to a full 85% of the total tax burden. For example a Single Individual making 30K paid $8400 in taxes under Clinton; under Bush $4500. A married couple making 60K: under Clinton $16,800, under Bush $9000. So Hillaryspeak, an economic strategy that left our Nation in a RECESSION on the Clinton's departure from the White House, would damage the poor more then any other group. One can summarize this quite simply by noting that IF Hillary's Marxist philosophies of soaking the rich were valid, Communist societies throughout the world would be exorbitantly wealthy, in lieu of economic basket cases a' la Castro's Cuba. The same can be said of her forced plan for Socialized Medicine. A program which is failing miserably in such Nations as Canada and the United Kingdom. Canada, as just one example, is now experiencing a dramatic shortfall in physicians. Greg Neubeck
