YOUNGSTOWN — Violence in the Mideast brought Arab-Americans downtown to express solidarity with those in the Gaza Strip under attack by Israelis.
A demonstration took place Tuesday afternoon in front of the Thomas D. Lambros Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse on Market and Front streets. Members of the Arab-American Community Center of Greater Youngstown said portraying Israel as a retaliating “innocent victim” is wrong.
Some of the 75 to 100 demonstrators held up signs that urged “Stop the violence,” “End siege” and “Stop U.S. aid to Israel.” Supporters driving by honked their horns.
The White House, calling for a lasting cease-fire in the Mideast, has backed Israel’s deadly air attacks on the Gaza Strip and said Hamas, the Islamic militant group ruling there, had shown its “true colors as a terrorist organization.”
After Hamas fired mortars and rockets deep into Israeli territory, Israel retaliated Saturday with a bombing campaign — the deadliest against Palestinians in decades. The continuing airstrikes, which have killed more than 360 Palestinians, have enraged the Arab world.
Outside the courthouse Tuesday, Maher Ramahi, a member of the Arab-American Community Center, said he wants the U.S. to put pressure on Israel to stop the violence and wants to see an end to foreign aid sent to the Jewish state. Ramahi, of Boardman, said he has “good feelings” about the incoming administration of Barack Obama.
“We’re also hoping the United Nations passes a real resolution and puts some pressure on Israel to withdraw; that’s the main thing,” Ramahi said. “The Palestinians already recognize Israel’s right to exist. We want, as Palestinians, to exist, too.”
He said the national press needs to show the aggression by Israel is not fighting terrorists, it’s killing Palestinian civilians. He said Palestinians want real peace for both sides.
Ramahi said he doesn’t support Hamas.
“Israelis have a right to defend themselves,” Bruce Lev, a member of the Jewish Community Relations Council, said this week. Lev said bombing by the Israelis came only after Hamas discontinued its truce, stocked up on ammunition and began rocketing explosives into civilian territory in Israel.
Sam Kooperman, executive vice president of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation, agreed with Lev, adding Tuesday that Palestinians say they’re oppressed but they’re the initiators. He said Hamas broke the cease-fire and puts rocket launchers next to homes so that there will be civilian casualties in Gaza.
“There’s just so much on this issue it’s difficult for people to understand,” Ray Nakley, spokesman for the Arab-American Community Center, said at Tuesday’s demonstration. “I think we need to continue doing education, but today we specifically wanted to bring our concern out to the public and allow everyone to see that there are people concerned about what’s going on in Gaza.”
Nakley said he’s very concerned about the U.S. government’s “biased foreign policy and its absolutely unbridled support for one side against another.”
Most Palestinians, like most people in the Muslim and Christian world, are not religiously fanatic, Nakley said. When pressed or threatened, however, you tend to go back to your roots — and religion, for many people, is a large part of those roots, and that’s when fundamentalist beliefs take hold, he said.
“When you feel no one else will help, you feel maybe God will help and sometimes there’s positive expressions of that and sometimes negative,” Nakley said. “We certainly don’t defend or agree with everything every party in the Middle East says, including Hamas, but there’s a context which is missing in the national media. I think our local media tries to do a better job.”
The national media, he said, always tries to pick up the story with Israel having just suffered a rocket attack and responding to Hamas. There’s never the precursor to that, which is the demolition of a home, the shooting down of innocent demonstrators, the imprisonment of people without trial for months or years, the destruction of livelihoods, turning Gaza into the largest open-air prison in the world, cutting off electricity, clean water and medical supplies, and causing people to die simply from lack of essentials, he said.
“Until we understand that these people are reacting because they are being ethnically cleansed as they were in 1948 — there are war crimes being committed — we will never put it in proportion,” Nakley said. “We would have used our nuclear arsenal long ago to prevent [our undergoing] 1 percent of what has happened to the Palestinian people. What part of this country would we give up, would we cede without a fight?”

If it weren't for the West, they would still be grazing sheep and pushing sand. If they hate us so much, why don't we just cut off all "Western" influences like they want? We can start with electicity, medicines, wheeled vehicles, aircraft, telecommunications. I know we could put them back in the stone age in about 10 minutes if they continue to fxxk with us.

Israel has trapped, starved, stolen homes from these people and now they're completely invading these people's country, yet somehow this is good news to some people. I don't get it.

Right now Hamas needs to have their funding shut off. They and their supporters will get the same treatment as CAIR and HLF. If Hamas can't buy missiles they they wont be able to replenish their supply.

Yes i do and none of those orgnaization send a single penny to Palestine. Do i stand for the national anthem during games, Yes i do. Do I pay my taxes, do i vote..yes..and yes. We have left the entire world come into this country and change it to suite them and our government has let this happen. Trust me, I can remember many years ago when my company HAD TO HIRE all these immigrants instead of Americans. Even though a lot of these workers were intelligent and good, we had a ton of them that were idiots, but we had to hire them. Many Blacks perished on 9-11-01 and the Black Community knows that. You score no points trying to solicit them in your plans. Most have a harsher attitude toward you than I do. Coexistance is the road to prosperity. Attacks on Israel are seen as good and bring cheers. Retaliations by Israel bring about threats to clean Israel off the map. If they had the power they would! In the past they hijacked airplanes and used suicide bombers. Today they are waiting for the bomb from Iran. Hatred prevails for the Palestinians.
If United States entered into Mexico taking over the streets, killing innocents people, refusing them rights, would you blame Mexico for attacking back. Headlines and everyone is repeating Hamas is shooting rockets. What about these headlines, 375 Palestinians have already been killed, or Israel continues to attack homes and children, or Israel refuses to allow aid to enter damaged areas. I dont blame Americans to have these impression because of the Media Bias, but take a minutes and research more sites.

Reality check: Did you see any scenes of Muslims upset that America was attacked on 9/11? No. Instead, we saw Muslims dancing in the streets all over the world, including in Palestinian-dominated Patterson, New Jersey. Even the normally "sensitive" MTV News got that story right. Why didn't Oliver Stone?
We saw the Palestinian woman handing out candy to kids in celebration of thousands of Americans vaporized. So many shots of Palestinian ecstasy . . . until Yasser Arafat threatened the lives of AP photographers lest they stop showing the real sentiment of the Arab street. We saw celebrations from Kabul to Kuala Lumpur to Cairo to Amman to Tehran.
Stan: I can't say that I didnt see what was going on in the street after 9-11. As a US Citizen it was heartbreaker event and didnt/cant blame americans for being upset after seeing the cheering. But its obvious that you dont care who is wrong or right in the violance in the middle east and you just want everyone with an arabic background to pay for 9-11. If the whole world things this way its going to be an endless cycle to lead to the destruction of the world. God help us all and anyone else who things this way.

I did support the protesters in front of the Court House. But its obvious you have no idea what the protest was about. Let me educate you. The protest was to show the support for Peace in the Middle East. The arab- americans as well as the jewish- americans there were not demonstrating to show hatred towards America. The protest was to show the community that we see what is going on in the Middle East and have our hands tied because we cant do anything, so let us stand outside and show the community we are thinking about them in Gaza. I was also watching MSNBC last night and found it interesting that an Senior Israel offical confirmed that they dont want the western media to enter Gaza because they know if the west would see more of whats going on then they would have to stop. So pretty much what they are saying is we know we are committing crimes and killing children and woman but as long as the west doesnt see it lets keep going and say its against Hamas. Since the ground attacks 50 out the 82 killed have been reported woman and children. Please explain how you think Israel is going against Hamas. I dont want you opinion about protests or 9-11 but im sure you will include that.
