Organization information

Mensa International was founded in 1946 by Richard Berrill, a barrister, and Dr. Lance Ware, scientist and lawyer. The society for bright people is open to those with IQ’s in the top 2 percent of the population. Some facts:

There are 100,000 Mensans in 100 countries around the world.

Age range of members is 4 to 94, but most are between 20 and 60.

Education levels among members range from preschool to high school dropout to people with multiple doctoral degrees. Mensa says there are members on welfare and some who are millionaires.

The organization says there is a “staggering” range of occupations among members, including: truck drivers, firefighters, police officers, scientists, farmers, artists, musicians, laborers and military members.

Mensa means “table” in Latin and is based on a round-table society where race, creed, color, origin, age, politics, education and social background are irrelevant.

Mensa’s Web site offers a practice test and gives participants 30 minutes to answer 30 questions. An example of a question: “If two typists can type two pages in two minutes, how many typists will it take to type 18 pages in 6 minutes?” Possible answers: 3, 4, 6, 12, and 36.
