Published: Fri, December 19, 2008 @ 9:36 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN — The first floor and rear porch at 427 Carroll St. were fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the vacant South Side house. For safety reasons the two-story structure was allowed to burn down Thursday evening.

The cause is under investigation and a request for emergency demolition requested. Damage was set at $6,400, a total loss. A firefighter pulled a muscle in his right thigh at the fire scene, reports show.

Another one. Big surprise.

Is *anyone* keeping track of these fires? I'm serious. It seems that every night brings another vacant house fire, particularly on the South Side. Are there patterns, in terms of cause, ownership or specific location?

It may be a convenient way to accelerate the demolition of these vacant properties, but it sounds mighty dangerous to the firefighters and to the folks living in the surrounding homes.
