YOUNGSTOWN — A 25-year-old Buckeye Circle man has pleaded guilty to two counts of rape and one count of kidnapping in an April 19 attack on a 7-year-old girl and been sentenced to life in prison with parole eligibility after 10 years.
Shawn Thomas entered his plea today before Judge John M. Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
As recommended by the prosecutor, the judge immediately sentenced Thomas to life in prison on each of the two rape counts and 10 years in prison for the kidnapping, with all sentences to be served concurrently.

Here is a story about a man who victimized a seven year old girl and, although he got 'life', he will be eligible for parole in 10 years. What amazes me the most about all of this is that a few dead dogs got more paper and air time than the violation of a seven year old child. I was lambasted and criticized as being cold and without compassion for my opinions about the dead dogs but where is all the outrage now. I don't see anybody claiming disdain or screaming for this mans head like they did for the guy who starved some dogs. For those of you that gave me a ration of crap for being so insensitive to the plight of the dogs all I ask is where is your sensitvity now? Those of you that spent countless hours arguing for the death sentence for the guy who killed the dogs and did nothing but belabor the facts of his case are nothing more than a bunch of pandering, bleeding hearts that hold yourselves up on a pedestal. Where is your outrage now?
Geomar, as I was reading all the comments on the HighCaliber story the other day, I was thinking the exact same thing: that such outrage rarely is shown when it comes to stories of child rape and assault. However, I do not think that makes those people 'bleeding hearts' because they value a dog more than humans. I think it means they are seriously damaged as far as their ability to identify with other people, instead choosing to endow animals with human attributes. Such people have no problem being insensitive to their fellow humans; they are unable to relate to others as they do to animals.
I can understand your perspective on the persons inability to undervalue a child versus a domesticated, or otherwise, animal. None the less I am perplexed at there not being one post here chastising this individual for his assault and yet the number of posts for the love of a dog was overwhelming. When peope in this community, as well as this country, place the value of an animal above the value of a child then we have basically seen the begining of a tremendous downhill slide in the values of our society. I can sympathize with all those animal advocates but the blankness of posts basically justifies what I said when I wrote about the dogs. So I simply ask the same question again - Where is all the outrage and outpouring of sympathy for this little girl, who by the way is alive and will have to live with this for the rest of her life?
I am one of the people who posted on the other board that you mention. And let me say, I am disgusted that this man did not get the death penalty. Not only do I have pets that i consider family members, I have a son and a niece I have taken custody of. If anyone would have committed this heinous act on one of them, I would be serving prison time because I would have castrated the sick individual that stole that childs innocence. My beliefs are for ALL living beings.
The only thing here is this idiot is paying for his crime, not to the extend I feel suitable but atleast he now gets to be big bubba's gal pal!!!
Being a mothers, I hope this man is raped beyond means in prison. I further hope his parole is denied in 10 years. I think he is the scum of the earth and anyone that can hurt a child or another human being for that matter deserves the harshest of penalties.
I think anyone who sexually assaults a child in any way should be locked up for life and never see the light of day or the taste of freedom. They should have a place or two in which these people should be locked up forever! They are sick individuals who will end up getting out and doing it again. This is why the systems fails children. I believe they deserve to rot in jail and then go straight to the fires with devil!
This guy WILL get what he deserves. He won't be in solitary and that will lead to the punishment that has been alluded to in the other posts. Hopefully worse. As far as the dog thing goes, what links the two together in your minds? One thing about people who mistreat helpless creatures, man or beast, is that if they do it to one, they will do it to others. Its a character flaw, personality defect, sociopathic illness, whatever you want to call it. Anyone who mistreats helpless animals needs to be punished and monitored to ensure they don't get another opportunity. Anyone who rapes a child should just be eliminated, because they can't be reformed.
The vast majority of child abusers are abuse victims themselves. The crimes they suffered are often as horrendous as the crimes they commit. And, never say a person can't be reformed. Everyone has the potential to change.
